P226 slide lock issue vs my fault?

I have a P226R and a P226 Classic. I had the classic first which is a .22lr and the mags don’t lock the slide on an empty mag. I then picked up the P226R in 9mm and found that almost every time the slide wasn’t locking back on an empty mag (factory P226 mag at that). Part of the problem is how I’m holding the pistol with my thumbs parallel on the side of the pistol. My thumb ever so slightly touches the slide lock button but I’m certainly not pushing down on it. The slide lock also engages solidly if I don’t touch the button at all. I do think the button is way too sensitive and I wonder if there is a solution.

Any suggestions?

You can make the concious effort to change your grip. I have the same issue.

You can also shave your catch, so your thumb doesn't grab it when cycling.

Or as he said ^^ you can get a stronger spring.

What grips are you using? Standard? E2?

It’s a P226R so whatever the stock grips are. They are the super rough plastic material.

Honestly I don’t really want to change my grip. I’ve got thousands of rounds down range with my Classic and another pistol and I’m pretty decent. I’ve tried a few different positions but all of them compromise my grip.

Where would I get a stronger spring?

I also have the exact same issue. I have tried to change my grip to what other 226 shooters use, but I find I have so much less muzzle flip when I get my thumbs high. I tell myself the slide lock isn't a real big deal anyways.

If you have a high grip and ride the slide lock, you won't lock open on an empty mag. Happens to me with my P226/P229 both. If I don't consciously keep my thumb off the slide release, it doesn't lock back. It is you, not the gear. All you need to do to prove it is shoot a couple of mags with a low grip off the slide release, and you will have proper function of slide locking back. It's a fine line with a high grip.

Anyone know where I can get a spare slide release button? If I can find a spare I’ll grind off half of it to get it out of the way of my thumb. I’m not changing my grip, it’s solid muscle memory now and it’s been proven to be fast, accurate and consistent.

I also had a similar issue when I started shooting a 226. The video is spot on. This was my natural reaction when I realized I was riding the slide release. It did not affect my shooting one bit.

OP,
The slide lock spring can be bent slightly by simply removing the take down lever & locking insert.
Or
Purchase a P226 Legion slide lock lever & install it.

my 19x did it but i adjusted grip, never happened again, funny never had a problem with sig226. alot of people experience this minor problem but sort it out by modifying grip.
