Looking to purchase my first handgun and have narrowed my decision between these two guns chambered in 9mm. Which do you think is better in your opinion? Pros and cons.

pick either one that fits your need/purpose for now, then eventually you will have both. I got the P226 first due to the decocker. will buy a cz, not sure if it will be canadian edition(can't get over the canadian flag. :)) or shadowline yet.

I am newer as well to pistol shooting. I spent 2 months shooting every pistol I could at the range. I have shot most calibers and everything from a $300 Norinco to a SVI worth $7000 (according to the owner). I would suggest you buy a 22 for your first gun. I purchased a used Ruger Mark 2 with the bull barrel and shot 2000 plus rounds through it while I was trying out every other gun people would let me shoot. I Have shot the 2 pistols you are considering and 2 weeks ago I bought the CZ 75 SP 01 Shadow. I bought this gun because I like the feel, weight, trigger, safety ect.

Buy the 22 because it is cheap to shoot and when you want to teach your lady or bring a first time shooter they can learn on a easy and safe to use gun. You will always find a use for the 22 and if you do decide to sell it you will most probably get all your money back. While you are practicing with a very cheap round to buy you can "test drive" anything you can get your hands on. Then you will know what you like regardless of what others say.

This was advice I got from all the experienced guys when I joined a local club and I am glad I was wise enough to listen to them. Now I can bring my first time shooter lady to the range (and it will be a cheap date LOL, BONUS)

Good luck in your gun hunt

I own a made in Germany P226 and a CZ Shadow. The CZ was my first handgun, the one I shoot the best and is still stock. The Sig P226 is a good gun, no question about it but I am not as accurate with it. Modifications or features I recommend for the P226 are a short reset trigger, a lighter hammer spring and the E2 grips. But to be honest, after all those modifications, I am still more accurate with the CZ.

Sig P226 after mods VS CZ Shadow:
Trigger pull = CZ
Trigger reset = Sig
Sights = CZ
Grip = CZ
Mag release = both
Slide removal = Sig
Fit and finish = Sig

Sig annoyances = I have to change my grip on the gun or my right thumb prevents the slide from locking back because of the location of the slide lever.

CZ annoyances = The slide lever is too far forward and out of reach.

If you need mags for a Sig, I recommend Mec-Gar over the Sig brand.

Hope this helps and good luck.

I've had both and kept the CZ mainly because it felt better to me but the Sig is a fantastic gun. hopefully you can try them both.

Yep. Shadow is by far one of the more reliable and easier to field strip 9mm's out there.

The sig is far easier to field strip than the CZ

I'm not sure if field stripping should ever need to be a metric in choosing a handgun.

..except that one time with a bad batch of ammo. I ended up blowing it off in a Glock because it was faster to tear down and hammer a 1 in every mag squib out of than the 1911 was lol.

Pretty much everything out there has simple and fast tear down next to a 1911 (what other pistols out there do you have to check for idiot scratches when buying used?)
Browning Hi Power is one of the best I've experienced for takedown, FWIW, since you don't have to hold anything under spring tension.

I've digressed...

But the Shadow has both made 9mm fun to shoot again, and has me thinking of selling my other 9mm pistols, save for the Hi Power. And it's a better shooter than the Browning. HP just looks far more pretty ;)

I have both (Shadow and P226) and compete with both. The Shadow is slightly better, but a little more finicky owing to it's tighter tolerances.

That being said, I enjoy both equally and they've been great to compete with. Wouldn't get rid of either one of them.
