P226 vs hk45

45 is a LOT more expensive to run, even if you reload. Other than that, I have the HK 45 and a p229, I really like them both, but if I could just have 1, it would be the HK

What is the purpose of the gun?

Shooting a lot, on a budget? P226

Best reliability and ammo price is no issue? HK45

Otherwise are looks important? Ergos, grip, feel; which one do you like more?

Alternative: hk p30l

Ergonomics are very important in a handgun. Which one feels best in your hand? Which one has the controls where you would place them? Which one gives you a sight picture that you like quickly and naturally when you bring it up to a shooting position? Which one has the smoothest trigger when you dry fire it (and how is the reset on the trigger)?

These are questions that only you can answer, and when you do you will know which one works best for you. (In a perfect world, one of these will be best in all of those questions, but in reality, the Sig will probably be best in some and the HK in others.)

Very difficult choice that only you can truly make. You are comparing, not only different guns, but different calibers.
It's like asking if you should buy a 4 cylinder car or a V8 truck. Only you can decide based on the purpose.
I own both calibers but I shoot my 9mm more. Cost is the main factor.

This is truth. Pretty much end of thread right here. For first handgun, you're gonna want to practice a lot. 9mm would allow that. Based on that, go with the Mk25.

If you are heart-set on an H&K, get the P30L.

Besides, the best .45 H&K makes is their full size USP. Just my $0.02.

I actually hated the HK45 so much, I never shot the one I owned. It felt cheap and heavy at the same time. Both of those guns have height of bore issues, both are needlessly complex. You won't have any issues getting consumables for the Sig however, and you'll be able to shoot more for the same dollars, so it gets my vote.

Full disclosure: I am a bit of a Sig fanboy, so I'm obviously going to recommend it :) On a more serious note:

P226 is quite a bit cheaper than an HK45. At least the last time I looked. Perhaps that has changed.
.22 LR conversion kits are available for the P226, for cheap trigger time.
Easy to change calibers. I have all 4 calibers for my Sigs. It is fun being able to switch from 40 to 9 to 357 to .22 in a matter of minutes.

In saying all this, I realllly want an HK45, or a P30. I would just choose a Sig first.

I own both. Between the P226 and the HK45, I enjoy the Sig much more. For me, the cost of ammo is not an issue since I shoot my 1911 every week. I think that the 45ACP is best suited for an all metal gun.

If you like the ergonomic of the P226 and want to stay with the 45 ACP, get the P227.
If you like the ergonomic of the HK45 but hates the feeling of the recoil, get the P30L

Two superb firearms. I have a USP tactical and a sig 226 Mk25. Either or, you'll be happy. That being said the 226 is very satisfying to hold.

IMO both are outrageously expensive and feel cheap. You could buy a decent 9mm and .45 for what you pay fir one of the ones you mentioned. Buy something you can learn fundamentals and practice with. Then buy something nice for all the hard work you put in. I'd hate to see another thread bashing poor shooting skills on a P226.

I own both, I'd give a slight edge to the 226 due to the ammo cost and the trigger. I have the LEM in my USP 45 and that was a very worthwhile upgrade for me. Buy once cry once!!

This if it has to be one or the other. There are other options.

TOTALLY AGREE , ERGONOMIC !!!!!!!!. Thats why i hate GLOCKs , uncomfortable at all , beretta so so , HK not bad but there is better choice , with ALL TYPES of SIG'S it feels like part of your hand . I like them A LOOOOT , because of ergonomics and balance , for me Sig Sauer on FIRST place .

always SIG Sauer P226 will be my choice btw the two!
SIG has better ergonomics, top accurate and reliable, not snappy like H&K, better trigger and cheap on ammo compared with today's 45ACP market price.

if you want a 45... then get a good name 1911 and forget the H&K........

First handgun what would you choose and why I like the 45 and 9mm so that's not an issue.

Dont listen to anybody on here, opinions are like azzoles lol, everybody got a different one. You need to hold both in your hands and see what feels the best to you and if at all possible shoot them as well.

Well this thread may very well end up in a "draw". I've owned the HK USP45 forever, used it in a TDSA advanced pistol course, 1000rds, 2 days, no issues, just keep inserting the mags and shooting.
The SIG I have less time on, very accurate, and one of the best DOA triggers "out of the box". Both top notch pistols from reputable manufactures. I have the SRT for the SIG but so far don't see the need. The LEM was a must for me, as I thought the standard USP trigger was horrible. There it is, I"m spent. Buy both and decide which one to keep. Either way it's a "win win" IMO. Cheers

Oh ya, I really shoot a Glock, but that's an different animal all together, LOL

I had a usp in 45 too, great fking gun!!! Id buy another one of those before id get a HK45 to be honest. Half the reason i wanted to try one was because of your signature lol. Loved that movie.

For a 45 pistol, it's hard to beat, it just works with zero maintenance. I was shooting reloads (dirty) as well and it just kept going. It'a a "keeper" for sure.
