P226 vs P229

The 229 is 7.10 inches long compared to the 226 at 7.70. Sight radius on the 229 is 5.70 versus the 226 at 6.30. 229 is 1.6 OZ lighter at 32.4. The 229 can hold 13 rounds maximum compared to the 226 at 15 rounds flush.

What does all that mean? The 229 was built as a Officers Carry or a CCW Carry gun. Its just a compact 226. :D

I'm looking at a P226 SAS or a P229 SAS... Are there any further differences? Would the 226SAS shoot as well as I hear the 229SAS does?

Thye two guns are similar but different, the mags and barrel will not fit each other. It's a matter of taste and fit, if your hand likes either one over the other, than that is the gun for you. Try the Sigforum for more indepth looks. Many people own both.

I was wondering about the mags. The other day I was talking to guy on the phone and he assured me that 226 mags would fit the 229:confused: He said the 226 mag would stick out the bottom of the grip on the 229 a bit but would function properly. I found that hard to belive. But now Im wondering if anyone has actually tried ?

Yes barrel is 3.9 inches which is to short for Canada.

SIG made sum with restricted length barrels barrels for us, there has been a Sport madel around for a while with a longer barrel, but these new 229s have a 106 mm barrel on them !

The 226 mag will fit a 229 -- but not vice versa.

No it won't, it falls out if you waggle it, tried it once at a match with a 20-round 9mm P226 mag in a .40 P229, quite embarrassing when it dropped out of the gun!

What are the differences between the 2????

The P229 is smaller in height and length, but is wider than the P226 to maintain the slide mass. (At least as far as the .40/.357 models go).

Magazine capacity in .40/.357 is the same either way (10 or 12 rounds).

There are 9mm versions of both guns. The 9mm P226 magazines can be used in the P229, but the .40/.357 mags have a different design.

The 9mm P229 is utterly pointless, I don't know why they bothered to make it. The P228 is lighter and easier to conceal.

My main gripe with the .40 P226 is the lack of size efficiency.

It came out in 1996 during the AW ban in the US, so SIG Arms couldn't be bothered with the mags and simply took the 9mm magazine and widened the lips.

The P229 magazine is wider than the P226 magazine, hence the reason they have the same magazine capacity.

Not that it matters in Canada.
