P229 Extractor issue??

My P229 9mm has been acting up lately, giving lots of fail to ejects. Whenever I shoot, the slide slides back, however the empty casing does not eject, and proceeds to feed back into the chamber. I had been wondering if it had anything to do with the type of lube used and the very cold weather, however my .22LR slide works just fine on the same frame, and when I rack the slide, it does not always eject or necessarily even fully extract the round. I field stripped the slide and compared how the extractor was hanging on to the case compared to my old P226.

Here is what I saw:

P226

P229

I realise that the old internal extractor and the new long extractor are different, and therefore may hang on to the case differently, but I thought that the difference here was rather striking, with the old extractor hanging on tight, and the new extractor looking like it is not really doing anything. I am just curious if any of you have seen this, and what to do about it. This was a Classic .22LR P229, with a 9mm xchange kit from Questar. Any info is appreciated.

Yeah that does not look right at all

I dont have much experience with the new style SIG budget cut extractors :(

Is the extractor not on a spring that can get cruded up? Is the spring broken possibly. Is the extractor claw bent? I've got a 229 short extractor, let me know if ya need any info.

sigs are junk now

Nice post troll. The poster I'm sure is looking for help not BS from someone who knows nothing and has nothing intelligent to add.

On a more helpful note I just checked the extractor on my two 229's and they both hold a snap cap tight to the breech face unlike your photo. Do you have a picture of the side of the slide showing the extractor? I would be interested in seeing how far it sticks out of the slide and whether it was bent out of spec or not.

Thanks, alot of people agree with me though.......

2katz and kxc, I am presently away somewhere substantially warmer than Manitoba, however I will post pictures when I get home. Thanks for the replies, I definitely appreciate the input.

I thought at first that they might have installed the wrong extractor, as the previous small extractor came in different sizes depending on calibre. It appears though that there is now only one size for the 229,226,220 and 239 as they list the same part number for all those models.
Have you contacted Questar about this? I'm pretty sure one of the guys there has a Sig Armorers certification so they may just be able to replace that extractor for you. It's not a big job you just have to have the part and the right tools.

is your slide made in US but frame made in Germany?

when they started out as US company, there were just assembling half of the gun here with US made slides. The problem was that they were using cheaper parts (according to the internet rumor). These issues are non existen now, but if you frame is from that era, or you have a 50/50 sig, it is most likely that some parts, such as the ejector and spring need replacing by newer parts. Brownells.com will help with that.
