PA shotguns

Glad I found CGN, man you guys are a wealth of knowledge. Being newer to firearms at first you might as well have been speaking Latin when mentioning all these older gun. Now you have me going down a rabbit hole, im researching guns left and right lol. I got accepted into EE today so have also been looking there for references to the models mentioned. Can’t wait to find something cool that catches my eye!

I do still want to track down an 870 Police model from the 80's with that awful metal top-folding stock/pistol grip (think: Terminator 2) . Pretty much because it looks cool and the 870 is a great gun too.

Take my word for it, you really don't want one of those top folders. They definitely look cool, but they are ####ing horrendous to shoot.

Another 870 fan here .... reliable ... and easy to disassemble and clean ... and you can get beautiful wood and old style polished blued metal .... :)

Here are the issues that I had with some of my Remington 870s:

  • One brand new 870 Police came from the factory with the barrel unpolished. I could stick my little finger into the muzzle and feel the tool marks. Needless to say ... that barrel was a lead trap and was a nightmare to clean. I had to polish that barrel myself with steel wool and a drill ... and lots of elbow grease.
  • Another brand new 870 Police was not releasing the slide properly after each shot and could only be racked if I racked the slide forward first. I had to polish some internal parts to make that shotgun work.
  • A brand new Tac-14 was difficult to rack and completely jammed at one point. I had to polish the chamber with steel wool and a drill and to resolve those issues.
  • The hardwood furniture on 870s is not varnished all around like the Walnut Wingmaster forend and stocks are. The surfaces mating to the steel and the but pad are bare wood. In heavy rain the wood will absorb the water and swell, and after drying again over the winter ... and shrinking .. the varnish will blister off. I had to give those stocks a good coat of TrueOil all around and inside and out.

So, yes .... there are issues with the current quality control on 870s. However, I am still an 870 fanboy and because I can fix all those issues myself. There is soooooo much information out there and to fix those known issues .... And the 870s are easy to take apart and it is easy to service those guns ... especially if you have YouTube instructions for all those known issues.

And to get parts and aftermarket parts is pretty easy ...

There are just so many 870s out there .... and so much information about them out there ....

And once you have taken care of those issues .... those 870s are just working ... working ... and working ... year after year ...

Thank you for being frank ,never owned a 'tactical' shotgun of any description but the express models were imho pretty much a poor replacement of the regular 870.Have had one since 1972 and it has been literally shot to hell but still works. My cousin had a 500 and it fell to pieces ,mossberg covered it under warranty but it was a long wait.

Hey everyone!
Just curious as to what everyone’s go to PA shotgun is? Looking to get my first shotgun and have been eying up an 870 fieldmaster. Any other suggestions?! I was going to get a 590 but was told Mossberg is a Walmart gun… thanks for reading my post!

Cheers,
DX
