Packing extra ammo

I use those folding ammo holders that are available at CT. I usually have two on me, during deer season one has ammo for the .308 and the other is .270. When carrying the shotgun, one has bird shot and the other has slugs in one half and buck shot in the other. They also connect to MOLLE rigging very easily.
 
I carry two mags, and a 10 round cartridge pouch on my belt for moose hunting. Ive never come close to using that amount in the week.
 
Five in the magazine, and three in a pocket works pretty good. Only one time I remember ever using more than three rounds on an animal. Still had a full mag for the pack back to camp. :)

my hunting jacket has loops for 5 rounds in each of the front dump pockets. 4 in the rifle, 10 in the jacket, and I usually spread the rest of a box out in my other pockets. I'll also carry a spare box in the pack. I make a habit of having spare ammo on an ATV if in use, and the truck hangs onto anything I don't want to carry :)
 
I make a point of carrying too many as it's better than too few. Ever seen "Deliverance"?
I use two of the plastic strippers out of a factory ammo box. 4 rds in the gun, nomatter what the gun is(so I always know I have 4 rds to take out again), the other six in the stripper in my chest pocket of my jacket. The other 10/stripper stay in my pack. Nomatter what goes wrong, I'd rather bring shells home again than have to go looking for more and come back. I still don't advocate having to fire more than one shot, esp on deer.
 
The reason I carry so many is if I break a leg or am unable to walk out I can fire the SOS pattern several times so my buddies will come look for me then pop one off at set intervals until they find me

And u never really know when or where the first wave of zombies will come from!

That's how most of the once a year hunters do it.
I guess for folks that don't use there shootin irons daily they don't need rounds close to hand.

No, for the most part you are not.

I have room for that much, so I carry that much. Usually have a Hammond Game Getter in the first hole too, with some spare nailer cartridges and sized buckshot for it rattling around loose in the bottom of the pouch.

I had a bad year one year in which I had a lot of things went wrong, either from tripping and falling, running out of the ammo I was sighted in for, etc., and learned that it helps to have enough ammo at hand to sight in with, as well as to hunt. It cured me of having a bunch of partial boxes of ammo around too.

If I go hunting away from home, I usually bring what I have loaded, or at least 100 rounds (two plastic boxes of reloads). Cheap insurance, when you don't have to carry them on your back.

Then 4 to load in my rifle.

Never, in 50+ years of hunting, have I needed 14 rounds.

I used to have 8 rounds of 4570 in a folding leather belt pouch, and 5 in a neoprene stock sock.

If you take a soldering iron and burn a hole in the right spot the rear sling swivel will hold the stock sock in place.

It also hides the deer figure I scratched into the stock next to my SI number.

Never needed it but a few extra rounds were conforting and I knew where they were...

If I read that right, in 100 years of hunting you have never needed all 28 rounds...

One of the better tips I have read in a long time ;)
I used to pack 50 round of 12 gauge in my pockets when I first started duck hunting.
There are many options, but what works for me might not work for you.
some guys only take three or four shells with them and that is it , that is all.

For rifle shells I use digital camera cases, you can buy them at Princess Auto surplus centre or Dollarama for cheap, they are well constructed and padded

I have 3 ammo wallet's that come in handy which holds 8 to 10 cartridges. They fold into a nice little package and fits nicely into a hunting jacket.
