anything to do with moose is work...I am thinking of the situation where the camp is only about 100 yards from the river bank-but up a steep washed out road down to the river.Even 4x4's are having a tough time getting up it now.Using a wheel barrow is to transport the quarters from the boat uphill to the camp is getting tougher each year-especially after a long day.We plan on taking a quad this year -but I was wondering about simply using the truck winch and one of those heavy duty poly toboggans for towing behind a snowmobile for the short distance.Do you think that would work? Can't winch the whole moose-that has already been quartered .

make sure you wrap the quarter in a tarp , then put it on one of thos plastic tobogan's . the tarp is for when it decides to roll off and in to the mud.
much the same way they bring the body's out on search and recover.
works well.;)

x2 yeah over rough terrain they flip pretty easy. We would wrap it up in a tarp as well. If you have time and partners I would use a pole to lift the quarters out. If you're alone again like the others said a pack board would take the load of lifting it out.

Erosion being what it is, global warming and magnetic fields and such, clearly it can be seen that the hill definitely got steeper. I hate when that happens.

We use a game cart to get our moose quarters from the lake we hunt to our camp approx 350 yards away. One of the guys in camp bought it, but a simple home made 2 wheel cart would work well being winched up the bank.

its not far-but 4x4 ruts and erosion have definately made it much harder to get up the bank-I could take the quad-but trailering it 1000 miles to use it for 100 yards doesn't make a lot of sense-I figured we ought to be able to use the truck winch and some sort of toboggan/cart/ whatever to get the quarters up to camp.

Use the engine hood off an old vehicle, if you get the right one it comes to a point and can carry a quarter with room to spare, some even have a keele for use in snow.

we used to have an old aluminum tubed rescue sled. designed to encage a large man so he could be "skidded" out of dangerous terrain. I'm sure we've all seen these things. .... sometimes bolted to the skids on a chopper..... rigged with skis to be towed behind a snow sled..... .... a handy guy could easily fab up somethin similar. Ours had a 1/2 inch of fiberglass on the bottom and it was indestructable and slid moose 1/4ers or whole deer easily over any terrain. Someone ripped it of from our hunt camp one year :( but it served us well for many huntin seasons

Neighbors of mine used a "come along" to bring their moose about 1.5 km out of the bush to the road
Tried that once...big mistake. Took forever to move the whole moose 20ft and we were only about 200yds from the truck (ended up using a full roll of 1/2" rope and pulling the bull out whole with my old Bronco) If you only have to move the quarters a short distance uphill, put 'em in your wheel barrow and use a crank handle boat winch to pull it up. Or invest in one of those chainsaw winches. Way easier to carry than the quad and will do the grunt work for you gents while you just steady the wheel barrow.
