It looks like bubba put some black paint over the fading areas of my 1942 Mosin-Nagant. There are splotches on the reciever and the barrel. Most of it comes off with my fingernail, but seeing as it's a 1942 and has some very rough edges, the paint is a pain to remove.

Is there a safe solvent that will strip the paint but not the blueing?

with any paint remover , its alway a good idea to do a test area, hopefully in an unseen area.

i used a CIRCA 1850 FURNITURE STRIPPER from homedepot $4.50 on my bayo which was pray painted black, the original finish is park and the stripper did not hurt it. its a real fast remover too.

you can check my tread in the MILSURP titled "have you seen a spray painted FNC1 bayonet?"

Any paint remover will do. So will a fine brass wire wheel in a bench grinder or rotary tool. Eye protection is mandatory.

Yes, I used the same stuff on my Ross Rifle and it didn't touch the bluing.

The Russians used a ####ty black paint to cover up gouges on rifles that they refurbished. It's usually crappy enough that a fingernail or just a finger tip can remove it.

It's likley that this is a Russian refurbishing step.
