Hi guys, I have a CZ Tactical Sport with wood grips that have checkering on them, the stock grips for the gun. I am wanting to get them painted with a simple design. I believe I need them air brushed to get the look I'm after. Is there someone in the Winnipeg area that could do this? Also, what kind of finish should go over the paint to protect it from wear? The grips probably won't get any solvents on them, but would have to stand up the some WD-40 occasionally. Would an autobody shop be able to do this with the equipment they use? Does the Clear coat finish on autobody paint have the wear resistance I'm looking for?

Lots of questions, I know. But whoever can answer them for me, will forever and ever, for as long as I live, from sea to shining sea, to the top of the highest mountains and the bottom of the deepest...... Oh hell, thanks for your help!:p ;) :D :)
 
If your looking for an airbrusher, check with sporting shops. Look for someone who paints goalie face masks. Also check with graphic design shops - if they don't have an airbrusher they probably contract out.

What did you want to paint on it?

I used PPG DU1000 top coat and added a flattening agent. It's the same product National Defence uses on their trucks and F18's (minus the I.R. component). Heated the shotgun gun barrel with about 25 rounds till it got nice and hot - then scrubbed it with a steel brush. All it did was polish it up.
As for cleaning oils - nothing seemed to affect it. To get it off regular polystripper wont even soften it up. You have to use PPG's special stripper.

Using cheep paint and top coat will eventually chip and scratch at the high points of the checkering. Nothing worse than a beautiful and pricey hand gun with a crappy paint job hangin out of your holster.
 
I hope no one steals my idea (hopefully I'm not stealing anyones either), but I was thinking that with the black slide and black plastic magwell, if I went black on the grips with a red (or multiple) maple leaf, it would really stand out. Still deciding if I should go with one large one or several small ones. I think small ones may loose the details in the checkering. I am just concerned about it wearing off easily. I will be using this gun for IPSC, and I do alot of practice as well.
 
Look at the Ambient Gun-Kote clear coat, or similar clear coatings from Dura-coat/Arma-Coat.

These coatings all are solvent/chemical resistant and air dry without baking.They are made specifically for firearms.
