Ok guys, I have seen all these threads lately about painting various guns....

I admit the quality of work has got me curious. Thinking about maybe doing some of my own. I highly doubt mine will compare to what I have seen on this board.

My question is this, How does the paint hold up to wear? Does it rub off easily? need re painted often? when I oil my gun will it whipe off? what about rust?

ok maybe there was more than one question there, but you know what I'm looking for.

Any input would be appreciated

I painted my first which was a Ruger 10/22 about 2 years ago. I clear coated it after I let the paint dry for 72 hours. I used Tremclad matte clear and it seems to hold up quite well. I have yet to see any flake off. I haven't hit the gun on anything sharp yet so I don't know about chipping much but I don't see a problem. Oil, grease just wipes off. I don't know about barrel solvents. They might damage the clear coat if you let them sit on it.
I will be using my latest gun that I painted in the field alot this year for groundhogs so if I see and issues I will post them.

Good luck

crazy train04: is that Tremclad clear coat an enamel? I've noticed that the Krylon Fusion will easily scratch if not clear coated. Did you clear coat the one that you recently posted?

Yeah I have noticed that Krylon will chip as well. I am not sure if its an enamel. I will look on the can tonight. Yeah I ended up clear coating that rifle because I knew that the krylon underneat can chip. Seems to be alot more durable after the clear coat. Just sucks that it adds a bit of shine to it even though its matte. I don't think the groundhogs will notice a difference!
The pictures of the Stevens 200 is before clearcoating.

Hope this helps.

You need to put some texture on the surface (scuff with some steel wool or sand paper) It's got to be degreased, you should apply a few coats of the fusion paint as a primer (so it "bonds") to the plastic, do your artwork and apply a few coats of clear coat.

Even witht he clear coat, it will chip or scratch eventually, but they will last for some time.

ok so lets say for example I want to paint my 870 express,

i need to degrease it? how should I do that?

and will it really need roughed up??

then paint away?

To degrease plastic stocks I wipe down with Rubbing alcohol.

With Krylon fusion pain one does not need to rough up the surface...Unless you want texture.

I use several even coats of the Krylon, and then finish up with a few coats of varathane Satin finish.

Before painting the synthetic stock, I degrease with Acetone. To rough it up, with a 120 grit sandpaper, then clean it with Acetone afterwards. Make sure you use that stuff in a ventilated area, gloves are also a good idea, it's nasty.

I havent decided what im planning on doing yet.

I figure i'll paint the barrel and action but leave stocks black. Im going to start with a dark green and see from there if I want to pattern it up.

If you were curious at all what my setup is here you go:

870 express 3 inch receiver
18inch vent rib double bead barrel w remchoke
short black fore stock
knoxx rear stock
