Painted my dads browning

Last year on a moose hunting trip. We came back from the cabin in small boats over salt water... unbeknownst to us some salt water got in my fathers rifle case, where the brand new browning a-bolt sat for 2-3 days. Needless to say the blueing was DESTROYED. Deep pitting all along the exterior of the barrel where the foam of the rifle case had soaked in salt water.
Everything internal including the bore was good so I sanded it down and dura coated it. I didn't do a good enough job sanding it down and soon the duracoat started to chip away. I just recently did the job right and sanded the barrel down until it shined like new, then I did this with a few coats of krylon.

Why didn't you taken it apart and than painted? I would personalty at least removed the scope and rings. that is just me.

Looks nice.
 
The paint job looks OK, and if you like it then that's all that really matters. What I would have done, and have done to many guns that I have come across in similar condition, is polish the barrels and then reblue with birchwood casey cold bluing solution. It goes on easy, costs very little and looks pretty nice. Black krylon to only the barrel would have given it a "blued" look as well. But hey if the camo suits you and it's practical then it's a great finished product. It just takes away almost all resale value of the gun compared to bluing it, especially painting the scope, it'll be very hard to sell that individually if you ever had the desire. But that's not a bad thing if it's gonna stay with you and your dad and kill animals in the forest :)
 
When I saw the "painted my dads browning" title I winced but now I hear the story and hear where you are coming from I can agree with what you did, there are a royal sh*tton of a-bolts around but for some reason there are allota armchair professionals on this forum that love to bash people :p

looks like you did a very nice job there op....or hey you could have took it somewhere to get it done for the cost of a new on and have people agree with you that the professionals did great!
 
I am assuming that you disassembled the rifle/stock before you painted it ......... and that is the reassembled photo ...................?
