Hey guys,

Got a 597 a few months ago and i like shooting it but im really bored of the dull grey colour and want to paint it in fde.
I have no idea where to start. Do i have to sand it down before painting? What paint do i get? Primer? Clear coat?
Ive never painted before. Any advice would be appreciated.

If this is in the wrong place please feel free to move it.

Thanks.

I have painted stocks before, but my 597 came pre-painted. I owned it for a year before I knew it was supposed to be grey, and not black. Contacted the fella I bought it from, and he had just used Krylon (spray).

As with most painting, surface prep is a huge factor. It's already a matte finish, so paint should stick nicely if you've got it really clean. Hitting it with something a touch abrasive wouldn't hurt though.

...I don't know what fde is.

We coat firearms and have FDE in stock. As camster noted the prep is the most important part. That said a good durable coating also goes a long way.

We use a product specifically designed for firearms for for your project we would use Stock-Kote from KG Industries. It is a very tough ceramic coating specifically designed for use on stocks.

PM or e-mail us if you are interested.
