Painting barrel

I've done it a few times just make sure it's well degreased and you should be fine.
Did my primary skeet gun because it has very light surface rust but it wasn't worth the cost of hot blueing or cold blue proseess.
Paints lasted 1000 rounds and 15 years no problem.
Good luck and share pics if you can.

Hard to say without seeing it. Start with very fine steel wool and WD-40. Gently rub to remove surface rust. Reevaluate once that's done. It's amazing how much comes off. Then watch a few YT videos on cold bluing. Don't paint it unless you want a cool camo finish or something.

I did it before to rework rust on the bottom of the action but I wasn’t sure if I should because of how the barrel will be visibly matching the the unpainted action which I don’t really want to paint cause of all the markings and stuff

I painted an old split shotgun barrel 5 years ago with rattle can rustolium for fun.
It was left out side in my junk metal pile. wow, it still looks not bad.
It did take several days to cure and harden,..but when it did, it was rock hard.

I've redone my stainless ever couple of years just for fun. Brown, black, even did a fake fluted look. A splatter camo go the longest with out neding a tuch up. FYI, As far as I could find rustoleum and tremclad come from the same facility.

I used gloss black on the action then I sanded it lightly with 600 grit after 24 hours and it matched the previous colour pretty well
