Painting Custom Stock

You could also try separating a scouring pad into thin layers and then pulling them apart. I have seen this used on plastic models for creating irregular stencils
 
A little different but I've done a couple by taking that spooky Halloween fabric you get from the dollarama around Halloween. It's almost like a mix between burlap and netting but very soft. I would just drape it over and wrap it around in an uneven way. Once you paint it it comes out with a nice almost smokey effect. You can do multiple layers of colours and in my case I didn't remove any fabric until it was complete. Just paint a layer add more fabric, paint another layer, add more fabric etc. I wish I had a picture to offer.
