For you guys that paint your guns I've got a question or two.

Seems that Krylon is the paint choice but is this for synthetic stocks only or does it work well on wood as well? I'm going to paint the wood stock on my kid's Savage Cub. What do you use for primer? Any tricks to know about?

Thanks in advance.

I use the Krylon Primer, but I haven't tried Krylon out on wood stocks. According to the Krylon website their Camo paint can be used on wood as well as synthetic.

If you look in the Photo Gallery in the M14 sticky, I just posted pics of a wood stock M14 I did with the Krylon Camo series paint. Use a good primer on the wood after sanding and you should be OK.

Many members on this board have used krylon with good results.

Myself, I don't like any paint out of a rattle can. Cheap paint is cheap. Professional quality catalyzed auto paint or a product like armacoat will be much more durable. It is also much more expensive.

I use a lot of Krylon
I find it to be quite durable and have several stocks, 1 wood and 3 synthetic as well as magazines, scopes, binoculars, frame on my hunting pack... and the list goes on.... all painted with krylon. I have not applied it directly to the metal of a firearm other than magazines.... but that's coming soon.

say you have a stock... you've painted it with krylon.... it is easy and cheap to fix wear and tear because the paint is readily availlable and requires no special procedures to use.

we like to refer to it as poor man's armacoat... although they are definately not in the same class as far as finishing products go.
for a wood stock and krylon, I would make sure the wood is sealed with an epoxy type spray or brush on coating, sand with 200 grit sandpaper and hit it with 2 to 3 coats of krylon primer. Then hit it with 3 to 5 coats of your desired krylon finish... and 2 coats of clear or matte clear. works for me
