im looking to paint my stevens 200 stock but was wonder about the checker pattern on the grip and forearm, is this going to be a problem? how do i rough up this surface before painting? im just worried about paint blotching on these area.
 
You can scuff it up with a finer sand paper. I take a razor and shave off the mould lines as well. If you're using spray paint, the Krylon Fusion is the best for plastic. I give it a few coats of fusion, then Krylon clear coat over it, and it's pretty durable...
 
The Checker Pattern areas will be just fine. I have painted 3 Stevens Stocks with Krylon Flat Black. If you are careful, make light passes with the paint, let flash dry in a 1/2 hour time and do it a few more times. Very durable with the clear coat. Rather than 'rough up' the checker pattern, I spray a self etching auto body spray on the rifle (looks like clear coat but smells way better). I use 'Pro Form' self-etching spray can be picked up at Lordco, Napa etc. Don't knock back the plastic checkering because it looks like garbage if it has been sanded!

i just finished putting on 4 coats of the krylon black camo, looks great but when i finished with the krylon acrylic clear coat satin and it looks awful. its has white spots and is a bit shiny. should i of used the Crystal Clear Acrylic? Or can i get away with no clear coat?
 
I wonder if there was some contamination on the stock to make the white spots? Never seen that, but you can just go over it again with the black and then leave it...
 
I simply cleaned mine and went with a flat tan Krylon, courtey of Canuck Tire. The "checkering" took it just fine, long as I went slow and applied thin coats, only a couple - it is a Stevens after all, not a Sako. Easy as hell to patch too. Acra-glassed the forearm in the hollows and it stiffened right up, shoots fine for a cheap rifle. Light and quick, easy to shoot.

I suspect the white spots were caused by too high a humidity when you sprayed and where it was dried. (?)

The shininess was likely due to too thick an application IMO.

It is also best to let the color coat FULLY cure before applying any overcoat in my experience.
