Hello,

Posting for a friend to get some info: These two rifles were left to him by his grandmother, who said they were his grandfather's "rabbit guns" for hunting out in the bush. He supposedly bought them new and had them for a couple decades, they have been in storage, forgotten, for the last 25 years according to my friend.

Having a look at them, I believe one is a Cooey Model 60 Repeater, and the other ("SureShot") is the same gun, but made for Simpson Sears back in the day. Correct me if I am wrong!

Issues he would like to know how to fix:

Only thing keeping the SureShot from being fired is the tube mag feeder/plunger is missing from the tube, he took the one out from the Cooey and it seems to fit, but has not tried it yet. The rear sight is knackered, the screw stripped and the sight mangled, however... it is drilled and tapped for a side mount scope... any idea what mounts can be used with this arrangement? He would be happy to scope it.

The Cooey is complete, in good working order... except for the stock being split in half! also a crack behind the tang. Is this fixable, and how? Which gun would be better to put money/parts towards?

Both bores look good, with the Cooey Model 60 having better and more clear muzzle grooves. Only parts really missing is a magazine tube (that inserts into the tube itself). Where could he get one of these? If you have one, let me know!

All parts will have to be found used.

Have never seen side mounts for optics in a store.

Check the EE and local gun shows.

Yes the stock can be fixed, you can also just buy a replacement.

Depending on the price he can get, if he does the work or not ect. He will likely spend more then they are "worth" in fixing them up...

Now, its from family so maybe it is worth it to him to get them back up to proper working condition... Maybe he just wants to hang em on the wall or keep them in the safe.

Maybe buy a "parts gun" cooey and take what he needs.

Ah, the famous cooey stock split. Often caused by over tightening the assembly screw on a dried out stock.

It looks like he has the parts for one shooter. Put the best barrel on the best stock and he is good to go.

If he is handy, the split stock can be repaired and parts can be found to get both rifles running, but it may not be worth it unless it is something that interest him.

The Weaver #2 scope mount fits the Cooey.

If he puts both rifles up on the EE as a package (with your excellent description) , I'm sure he could find a buyer in the $225 to $275 range for both.

Hello,
He intends to keep them. I shall look into a pair of Weaver #2's and hopefully find a side mount scope mount, worst comes he may have to have it re drilled and tapped for top mounts? Or does someone know where I could get the side mount?

Thanks guys,

Got in contact with a fellow CGN'er and got everything I needed to help my friend restore both! Just need to pin/glue the one stock back together and oil her up, and she's good to go.
