PAL and RPAL from abroad

Hello Everybody

I have tried searching older threads, but I can't seem to find any up to date info on this. I apologize in advance if this is repeated elsewhere.

I am a complete gun nut and thus my dilemma: I am hoping to relocate my family to Calgary withing the next year. Our application for Permanent Residence should be completed by July 2015. I don't have PR yet...

Relocation costs from South Africa is pretty significant, so I am hoping to avoid multiple trips to get my guns there. I am planning on bringing 4 long guns and 3 handguns (These are in the restricted category. Unfortantely, I need to sell the prohibited's before leaving... :( ).

Is there a way to get my PAL and RPAL before actually being in Canada? I would say that I am pretty proficient with guns. I just have to get myself up to date with the current laws governing firearms ownership and use in CA.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Just my 2 cents but I believe to get a pal and rpal you first have to pass the canadian safety tests and then apply for the license. I am sure you need a permanenet canadian address as well. Importing your guns is another story. Check on the rcmp website for proper information
 
I doubt you could get your pal without actually being here to take the test. You should be able to ship and transfer your guns to someone already here that will hold onto them for you until you get your pal & rpal completed.

You do not need to be a Canadian citizen or have a Canadian address to get a PAL. You do need to complete the course or for now could challenge the exam in Canada. That option will be going away eventually, I would assume by early 2014.

Unfortunately you will have to do the course or challenge the exam in Canada - it anyone offers them abroad that is news to me. It takes a minimum of 28 days to get a license once you have everything submitted, including your course or exam report from the instructor.

Last time I heard you do not need to be a resident of Canada to get your PAL as I have met a few Americans that had their PAL`s, but they were able to take the course here in Canada or they took the course in the States as some were held in the U.S.A. ! I know this is not much help to you in South Africa as I have no idea how you would take the course there, but where there is a will there is a way! Good Luck! :)

i went through what you are about to

plain and simple method is find a dealer (plenty on the site) who you can ship them to from SA.
thats the easiest way for you.

otherwise you will be flying back to SA to transport your firearms back to canada after you have attained your PAL/RPAL here in canada.

i wasnt a resident when i took my course and got my license BEFORE my PR.

as for the PR,keep all airline tickets reciepts(even pets if you are bringing any),all shipping receipts for any personal items.
all this is tax deductable when you file your taxes.
