PAL Application Process Question

Hey all!

So I've been not-so-patiently enduring the RCMP PAL Application process, and I'm on the "submitted" stage where the application is reviewed by each individual department within the RCMP, in order to check over personal history and what not.

My question is, typically (and especially for recent PAL recipients) how long does this portion take? The woman I talked to from the RCMP said she couldn't give me an exact time, that I should expect a call from someone, and that I am completely passed the 28 day window they mention during the application process.

Any experiences or advice would be great lol Thanks!

all experiences will vary depending on the results of each step and your location. Information is shared more and more between departments and etc so things take less time then ever, but youre dealing either with provincial CFOs and feds, or just the feds. Depending on where you live it is run by provincial authorities or the feds, so that adds time.

The 28 day period is a minimum, and if there anything in the medical or any other field that they choose to investigate they will take extra time as they will have to verify with 3rd parties.

If you applied for a standard PAL then your references may not get contacted. If you applied for a Restricted then they will be contacted, which may add time. They tend to try 2-4 times and then wait for callbacks, so scheduling can be a potential issue

I had to submit a paper application. Had an old expired POL from 25 years ago and one other minor issue (nothing criminal or spousal related).
Called several times. Only got through to New Brunswick once. The other times I talked with the Provincial Firearms Office and I did send an email. It took eleven and a half months, but it did finally come through.
The only advice I can give you is politeness and patience.

Anywhere from 4-weeks to over a year and everything in between. I got mine in 4 weeks, I have friends and colleagues that got theirs around the same as me, some 2-3 months later and a few are now at over the 1-year mark (or very close to it).

We collectively as a group tried to rationalize why there was such a massive discrepancy in wait times. Some of us think if you have a fairly uncommon name, its easier to look up and check as opposed to a "John Smith" where there might be thousands. Some of us also think that if you have already gone through travel access processes (like that needed to obtain your NEXUS), this might also speed up the process as you have already gone through background and screening. These are just assumptions though.
