I'm going to be sending off my PAL application form soon, and was just wondering about the personal references. I have mine picked out, but wanted to give them a bit of insite as to the line of questioning they will recieve. I kind of feel obligated to inform them, but maybe I'm thinking they will be harsher questions than they really are.

So to those that have done this before, I am assuming that there is a standard list of questions that they ask your references. Does anybody remember what kind of questions thay ask? Any examples.

Thanks.

This is what they asked my reference person
Are you ok with him owning firearms?
Do you know if he is a violent person?
If he becomes violent please notify us.

One of my friends had one of his references called. They were asked:

So-and-so has you as a reference for a firearms app, where you aware of this?
Is so-and-so violent?
Would you be ok with so-and-so owning firearms?

Thanks

In Quebec they are now calling references on every restricted transaction. Privacy violation issues aside, be careful who you pick as your references.

Ontario might do this in the future, who knows?

they called both of mine. i used my parents lol some of the questions i remember
- does your son ever show signs of violence or rage
- is your son depressed
- has your son ever threatened anyone
- does it bother you your son will be keeping a gun or guns the house

there were alot more like this type of q's.

Alberta to...

My reference's just got called for my RPAL...
-Known to be violent?
-What might cause violence?
-Any regrets about signing application?
-Call if any trouble..
Called me asked basically the same kinds of questions and WHY did I want a handgun...WOW !

they did't check anyone on my list i find they like checking them when u renew ur PAL or RPAL though i wonder why???

Of course your references should know that you have given their names to the CFC. And of course you would not have named anyone as a reference who might say something negative.
As indicated above, the questions are pretty basic, and obvious.

In addition to the above, mine got:

1) Were you forced to act as a reference?

2) Are you alone and free to talk openly about the applicant?

3) If you suspected the applicant was about to committ a violent act, what would you do?

4) How do you know the applicant?

5) How long have you know the applicant?

If you can, list people that ALREADY HAVE THEIR PAL.
I've never heard of ANYONE getting a call regarding someone using them as a reference, BUT, everyone I know that sent in their PAL papers used someone else that HAD a PAL.
Easier for them to do a background check, if they can type a name in the computer and see what they want, its easier than calling someone and hoping they are home.

The conspiracist in me wants to suspect that any name on a reference check will be added to the All-Knowing-Database as a person of interest for firearms. They don't have to be a gun owner, just be included in the circle of acquaintances of someone who does. The cops use this for criminal intelligence gathering all the time.

Spoke with a reference (colleague) of a student I had last year. They asked her if the applicant had ever expressed an interest in workplace violence.

Hmm... So you can't list shooting up your workplace as a reason to apply for an RPAL? Damn... What if you're a postal worker? :D

I was actually thinking of having my boss at work sign the application. At least that will take care of this particular aspect. I can imagine the conversation:

CFO: "Hi, this is the CFO. Did you know that this person wants to apply for a firearm permit?"

Reference: "Yes, I do. I signed his application form."

CFO: "He's also applying for a handgun permit. Were you aware of that?"

Reference: "Yes, I am."

CFO: "Do you consider him as violent or trying to use firearms at his workplace?"

Reference: "That's a negative on both counts."

CFO: "How can you be so sure?"

Reference: "I'm his supervisor at work. Plus we're government employees, just like you, sir."

CFO: "Uh... Thank-you for your time. Good day, sir."

(RPAL gets mailed 30 minutes later)
