Do you need to take the pal course in Ontario, or can you just challenge the exam? A long time friend of mine was asking, but I didn't know. Thx

You can challenge both PAL and RPAL in any province I think? But they prefer you take the course.
If you challenge the exams, they will not help you clarify questions or ambiguities on the test ( and there are some quirky questions).
They will help if you take the complete course.

That's what I did. Sitting through the course would have been torturous. That said, sitting through the instructor course was torturous too.

I challenged the test, the instructor was very cooperative. It is a federal programme and so does not vary by province. There was a web page with test exams you could do for a small fee ( sorry do not remember name of it ) and this helped me get ready. It is all in the book. He had a practical part set up where you had to handle a gun crossing fences etc. very thorough and all things a newcomer to firearms should know. Circumstance prevented me taking the course but it is well worth the effort. Our instructor was ex-RCMP and very knowledgable.

As others have said, you can challenge both PAL and RPAL. One thing of note is that if your friend wants to take up hunting, taking the CFSC is still mandatory prior to taking hunter safety.

If you don't take either the course or swallow the manual, there are questions that will trip you up. The important thing to remember is the book was written by legally-minded people and not practical shooting people. Some of the teaching points make me cringe, like looking down the muzzle of a firearm.

There was a nonsponsor who would spam you with a daily examination quiz question. If you goofle Dave Bartlett in eastern Ontario, I think you will find his firearms training dot ca site. I've known the man for a decade and took some recertification course from him (I forget even why).

With my PAL I paid for the class... even though I have been around firearms all my life and a high profile security contractor for ten years... I fell asleep in the class and passed 100% correct. But then again this is Alberta...
