PAL required?

A PAL does not confirm you are a licensed hunter.

A hunting license confirms that you are a hunter. a VALID "PAL" confirms that you are legally possessing the firearm. 2 pieces of paper ok, 1 plastic to keep at least 2 levels of bureaucracy from wetting their pants.

yup
So thats what I carry - my PAL, my Ont Outdoor card, my tag, my Ont DL and a Visa card & a few dollars....
I have a small zippered wallet to carry these items only when I am hunting

...are you legally required to have the PAL with you?

The law allows a law enforcement officer to seize a firearm until such time as a license is produced; upon the production of a valid license, however, the firearm is to be returned.

So... a licensed individual (who doesn't carry it) might be inconvenienced, but - if the individual is, in fact, licensed - because the license is a defence to the (suspected) crime, a charge is very unlikely.

I recently picked up two pairs of cargo pants from Costco that have a little zipper pocket behind the front right pocket. They've become my hunting pants and I keep basically the same stuff you just listed in that pocket, I love it!

Before that I used to put my tags and licenses in my bino harness or even bury them in my pack if I'm out for multiple days.

Ontario Regulation 665/98: HUNTING adopted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997

25.2#(1) No person shall hunt with a gun unless the person meets at least one of the following requirements:

1.# The person holds a valid possession and acquisition licence issued under the#Firearms Act#(Canada).

2.# The person holds a valid minor’s licence issued under the#Firearms Act#(Canada).

3.# The person has proof that he or she has successfully completed the Canadian Firearms Safety Course, and tests that form part of that course, under the#Firearms Act#(Canada).

4.# In the case of an individual who is a non-resident and who ordinarily resides outside of Canada,

i.# a valid non-resident firearms declaration form confirmed by a Canadian customs officer, or

ii.# a valid temporary firearms borrowing licence for non-residents issued under the#Firearms Act#(Canada). O. Reg. 544/17, s. 4.

(2) A person shall carry on his or her person the documentation required under subsection (1) while hunting with a gun and while in possession of the gun for the purposes of hunting, and shall produce the documentation to a conservation officer at the officer’s request. O. Reg. 544/17, s. 4; O. Reg. 461/18, s. 10.

There's the 577 Snider though...lots of Sharps offerings. You could be hunting with one of them and not require a PAL...they are a firearm and do not require a permit to own, no?
A PAL might still be required for the license...but would a PAL be required for hunting, that is the question that needs asking?

wow.... this thread..... is it april fools or sumthin?

of course under todays regime you have to have your PAL on you when using your firearms..... for anything....... Duh!

...............................and don't forget you'll need a Liberal Party of Canada membership card or it'll be off to the Gulag retraining camp for you.

Because hunting licenses are issued at the provincial level it is worth noting that what is true in one province may not be true in another. In Ontario, you do not need a Pal to hunt with a gun but you do need to pass the CFSC. The difference is subtle but important in some instances.

ok... what does any of this have to do with a CO being able to prove you are a certified (wtf is a certified?) hunter based on a PAL? The PAL contains no hunting info.my 15 and 17 year old sons don't have PAL's but are accreditted and licensed hunters.

Maybe re-read page 18 of the Ontario 2020 Hunting Regulations Summary, the information therein is very clear under the "Firearms License Requirements" heading.

In NS a certified hunter is someone who completed the hunter safety course/tests and registered their course on their wildlife card.

A CO does not need to ask for your PAL to prove you are a hunter. Guaranteed they will ask for your hunting license though. I have never been asked for my PAL by a CO.

I know lots of PAL holders that are not licensed hunters.

Yep, I’ve read it and it confirms what I stated. Namely that you do not have to have a Pal in order to hunt with a gun but do have to have taken and passed the CFSC.
