Not really sure where this best fits. Tried some searches but nothing really answered this for me so hopefully not a repeat.

If I currently have a PAL and wish to upgrade to RPAL. After taking the course/challenging the exam will I be required to submit my current PAL card with the application for the RPAL? Basically this would leave me without my card, and 'in theory' unable to transport/use my firearms?

Is there anyone who has gone through this process that could let me know?

Thanks,

Alex :D

i dont think so. im pretty sure that when you finish the exam for the rpal, somebody (you or your instructor) will send the test away, when the test gets mailed back to you, you then fill out an appl for an rpal, you send that to whoever (i think the cfo) then they will send you a new card.

somebody correct me if im wrong.
good luck, nate

I did the same thing as you Buzz. No, you do not have to relinquish your existing PAL, you fill out the paperwork and they will issue you a new card likely with a new 5 yr expiry date with the little words Restricted added to the back of the license.

A buddy of mine says he sent his application via express post and recieved his RPal in a week. Is this possible or was he full of s**t?

He's full of it. Minimum of 28 days from what the CFC states.

You mail off your application to NB where they look over it and then mail it back to the CFO in your province.

The mail takes a week just to get across Canada from the Central Processing to the CFO in BC.

i never heard of sending in your PAL. just destroy the old one as you cannot have two. I think the 30 days wait time is waived, i got my upgrade within 21 days using xpress post. this is for upgrade only.
alot depends on if they can find your references all on the same day. i was lucky, both were home, and so was I.

If you got a form from the instructor, complete the same application you used to get your old PAL but fill out the RPAL section and mail it in with a new picture to the CFC and they'll upgrade you. You don't have to pay any more money to upgrade your license. You don't have to include your old license either (I still have mine sitting on my computer desk).
Make sure your references are easy to contact and that will speed up the process more than anything else.

Like the other guys have said you don't have to send in your PAL before you get your RPAL. I did the same thing this year. I had my PAL, and wanted to upgrade to my RPAL. I took the course, mailed in my forms, (which is free to upgrade until May 2010, no 60$ license fee), and recieved my fresh new RPAL in the mail today. In 30 days my original PAL expires, and its on me to destroy my original PAL. Now the only question in which 1911 I should buy, decisions decisions.....

You don't have to wait the 28 days if you are upgrading and start with at least a POL, the mandatory 28 days is when you start from scratch. A week seems very efficient :)

same as you I had pal and upgraded a month ago, didn't have to send my card just the pal #,web site says that it has been processed and my references checked so I'm just waiting for the card, and then my sig elite(drool)

Sorry, brother, you're wrong. The minute the CFC interviews you and your references, and all the boxes are checked in, it's sent electronically to your CFO. The day after you know your references have been contacted, and your phone intereview has been completed, make sure you phone your CFO to make sure your application isn't sitting in queue somewhere. In Alberta, at least, there's a good chance your application will be approved while you're on the phone with them.

When I was foolishly thinking of getting another handgun, I called CFC and the lady advised they had a copy of my certificate, and I was only required to reapply for the RPAL.
