PAL Wait Time

This may seem like a strange question but are you male or female? I've heard recently females are getting pushed through immediately. Not sure if there's any truth to it.

Definitely not always the case, I'm female and I applied in March - nothing still.

Time for RPAL in QC
Mai 1st they received my request
September 18th i was approved (no calls were made to my references)
September 27th received it in the mail.
Little under 5 months, i did do my hunters license and sent it to my CFO (to add it to my file) a couple of months ago.
Might of helped but i cant be sure.
Good luck!

My PAL application timeline was very quick .
aug 31 application sent via registered mail
Sept 5 arrives at RCMP
Sept 9 Credit card charged
Oct 3 application has been processed/approved and license has been issued . Should be arriving within 2 weeks

29 days total from the day it was delivered

Wow, may I know which province you are in? I am just curious. Does R-PAL increase the processing time? I submitted PAL and R-PAL at the same time. It has shown 'initial review' since August 18th. I called once, and the lady said it has been transferred for the final review. I can do nothing but wait.

I’m in Quebec .. I didn’t check any boxes maybe that helped it go faster but still
Very Shocking how quickly it went through.. I was expecting multiple months of waiting as my friends were telling me it’s a long process .

None of my references were contacted

I see, seems Quebec now is pretty fast, another post said he got it in around 40 days.
I dont have any boxed checked neither, but...
I assume, it is because of the R-PAL. I guess R-PAL's waiting time is a little bit longer than PAL.

Thank you for your email. Your application has been forwarded to us at the Chief Firearms Office for standard review. At this time, we are not able to provide a date of completion. Please expect a 6-month delay from the date received by the Canadian Firearm Program *2023/07/01* for initial review.

Application submitted May 2 online in SK
No change in progress tracking still says app successfully submitted. This is month 6.

Have phoned / emailed cfo and cfp and they said should be soon but to call back in end of Oct they may be able to do something about it since it would be close to or passed 120 days since the federal cfo/cfp employee received the application.

Hope for the best will post when I get more info

I live in BC. This was my timeline. Applied for restricted and non-restricted. No boxes checked on application. Just over 7 months start to finish.

February 28th 2023 - Applied online and credit card charged.

February 28th 2023- "All of the required signatures have been received and your application was submitted for processing"

March 3rd 2023- "We have completed the initial review of your firearms licence application. If additional information is required, you will be contacted. Please check the status again at a later date"

October 7th 2023- "Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your
licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canadian Firearms Program"

Another data point. (Thanks, Takuchan, for the clear format that I have, erm, borrowed...)

So...2 months plus a few more days for the post (I hope). It would be nice if we could send in the application straight after completing the CFSC courses and then upload the CFO stamped proof during the wait period. However, not complaining; I am just relieved not to be on the end of one of the horror stories in this thread. To those waiting 1+ years; I am SOOOO sorry for your pain.

Thought I'd share my timeline for mailed RPAL Application as a first time applicant from BC.

September 2nd and 3rd : Completed course training over a weekend, got my completion letter on the same day.
September 10th : Posted mail
September 14th : Got notified by Canada Post that mail was delivered.
September 28th : Payment charged on my card, application became trackable online, mentioned about initial review...
October 16th : Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canadian Firearms Program Toll Free number (1-800-731-4000).

Note: I had to attach a PCC copy to my mail from previous country of residence, no references were contacted, I phoned the CFO at extension 9530 before the weekend ( 3 days ago ) and politely asked for update on my file, explained my reasoning for my application, This was friday, comes monday ( today ) application was approved!

Sept 20 -Mailed my application for restricted/non restricted (past six months expired, new application in full)
Sept 29 - application recieved
Oct 12 - card charged
Oct 18 - application returned for missing information (forgot one references address)
Oct 18 - called CFP, they corrected the information, and license was issued immediately after a five minute hold on the phone.

I feel like I got lucky. I’m in Ontario btw

My experience in BC:

Application for PAL completed online, including reference and spouse confirmation August 1. Didn't bother with RPAL because what's the point nowadays?

I ticked one of the "bad" boxes. My ex wife made a malicious police report against me during our separation 4 years ago. Police did nothing directly on the report; but, they did forward the report to our local child welfare office. Child welfare did an initial investigation and concluded there were no concerns - they sent out a closing letter. I included the closing letter in my application package.

Polite email to BC CFO after 45 days.

Online status changed to approved/PAL in the mail on October 19.

I'm actually surprised it only took 11.5 weeks in my case, given the domestic partner police report and, albeit brief, interaction with child welfare office.

Beware C-21 includes an amendment revoking anybody's license if they were ever suspected of committing domestic violence, conviction not required.

Does calling them actually help? I've been waiting for more than 3 months now and I don't know if I should take any action or just passively wait for them to eventually give me my PAL.

It helped in my part, because I received a letter saying I was missing information. Instead of filling in the highlighted areas and snail mailing it back, I called and they filled in the missing information over the phone electronically. It would have taken much longer if I mailed it back in. They were pretty helpful over the phone actually if you’re polite. I was asked if I didn’t mind holding for a few minutes while he tried to push my application through. After a hold I was told “just to let you know your license has now been approved and will be sent out in the mail shortly”

Definitely not what I expected. Figured I’d be waiting six months at least from the horror stories on this thread.
