PAL Wait Time

Hi All, New here but I figured I'd share my experience so far:

RPAL Application,

June 12 2017: Sent application as well as documentation of completed CFSC/CRFSC
June 16 2017: Received by RCMP
July 21 2017: Shows up online (Your application has completed initial processing. It is now in progress. Please check the status again at a later date.)
Aug 8 2017: Reference receives letter to call RCMP for interview (They never called him)
Aug 10 2017: Reference completes phone interview
Aug 10 -20 2017: Called RCMP 3 times to follow up. They say everything is complete and in the hands of the Nova Scotia CFO.
...
Sept 17 2017: Still waiting (Completed initial Processing)

Update Oct 3 2017 (Day 113): Still with the CFO office. No eta according to the folks at the CFC. So far my experience with their information officers has been extremely pleasant but there is still no end in sight.. seriously considering contacting the NS CFO office to inquire but I’m afraid that it may push my application back even further.

I mailed my RPAL application in roughly the same time as you and received my card at the end of August. I had already joined a club and sent my membership with my application, maybe that helped?

This is for my CFSC.

July 23, 2017- Completed course
Aug 24, 2017- Test results received in the mail
Aug 28, 2017- Application received in Miramichi, NB.
Sept 28, 2017- Application status appears on line. Initial stage of processing complete.
Oct 3, 2017- Licence issued and mailed. If I don't receive it in two weeks, then RCMP wants me to call them.

I'm very satisfied with the time it took to issue the license. My instructor said it would ideally take about 3 months from the day the course was completed.

Wife and I sent in our RPAL applications, upgrading from PAL.
July 27, 2017 - Applications received.

My application was complete, but my wife's was not. She hadn't filled out the personal yes/no questions.
It was returned to her, she kept it at home for about a week before completing it and sending it back. Figured that would delay hers a bit.

October 1, 2017 - To my great surprise, my wife's RPAL arrived in the mail....no references called.
October 4, 2017 - My application (which was complete!) still "initial processing"

This seems very random. I was told 5 weeks ago that it was with the CFO for final approval, no references would be called.
At this point my wife's incomplete application was returned, sat at our house for a week and then sent back....still hers was issued, mailed and received already.

I called and politely asked if there were any hold ups, and was just told its complete and with the CFO for final approval. Call back in 3 weeks...

I am in no rush, but it seems they just stick them in a pile and randomly pull them out when they process them! ;)

Newfoundland:
Completed course Aug 12
Mailed in Application Aug 14. (All "No" checked and had a previous Firearms Acquisition License that expired (health reasons but not wanting back into the sport. Lost out on the Browning rebates ended Sept 30 lol).
Received in Miramichi Aug 17.
Called in Aug 28 and told to wait.
Application showed up online Sept 21 (well beyond the mandated 28 day wait period).
Called in Oct 02, beyond 45 day target. Was told busy time of year; Application is in order and they were waiting to hear back from the province. I didn't need to take any further action or have references call in.
I assume the story you get is about the same for anybody who call in. It's rather generic really and I assume just varies based on who answers the phone and their mood at the time :)

Still waiting and application shows online as in process still as of Oct 05.

I don't understand how it takes in excess of 20+ business days to enter an application. If the place it that busy then they need more people on staff around busy times such as leading into the fall.
If they the CFO or RCMP for each province has to review it's really shameful to have an application entered into the system already beyond the mandated 28 day waiting period.

With today's technology this should be streamlined and automated. You pass your course you receive a unique number (UN) that allows you to enter your first time PAL application online. Each UN would be on the paper copy you fill out to do the course. The same paper copy your marks are entered on. The UN from that gets entered by the instructor into "they system" as verification/validation of passing/failing. Applications are instantly online, Miramichi can verify data or whatever they do now. However at the same time CFO/RCMP can do their end. So in my case the 20+ days to just get in the system gets eliminated.

To do a course early August and not have a PAL come hunting season is somewhat sad..

you should be satisfied, mine was received a month before yours and is still in progress.

Mine is supposedly in the mail now - received in their hands August 18th, 2017, didn't appear in the system for just under 5 weeks, then in process for two weeks and now "in transit" for one week.

My wife and I sent in our RPAL applications on July 27th (Manitoba).
Both licences have now been issued, my wife already got hers and mine is in the mail.
My license was issued on Oct 11th, my wife's a few days earlier.

Pretty decent, considering hunting season is around the corner.

I thought they processed them in order of when the application was received? Guess not.

Based on the dates received and dates issued, I guess not. Perhaps it varies based on your province. It also occurred to me that I already have a police background check on file because I volunteer with my kids sports, and that may make it quicker/easier to approve.

Couldn't agree more, the wait times are absurd. 203 days here.

wait times aside, just imagine how much more cost effective the system could be if you made the applicant do the data entry work. Yes, you might still need to scan and upload a copy of your course form and signed reference pages, but the time, labor cost (and potential for errors) that comes from manual data entry would be eliminated. Just don't hire the group that designed the government payroll system to design this system...

This is very helpful...saved me the time of making a phone call to ask "have you got my application yet..." Thanks

Update Oct 22 2017 (Day 132).. Still waiting, tried calling the NS CFO office to inquire as to why it's being held up on Oct 18, all I got was voicemail and even though their voicemail message said they would return calls within a business day, I have yet to be contacted.

This is ridiculous. All I did was be 100% honest with my application and check yes to being diagnosed with depression in the past 5 years. now I'm stuck waiting in what seems to be limbo.

What greatly annoys me about this whole experience is that nobody will tell me anything, just that it's "still in process.."

I have the full support of my wife (She even signed a letter stating her support which I included with my application) yet I feel like that doesn't matter.

I will continue to wait...
