PAL Wait Time

Just got issued the license

March 8th, 2021 - Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued.

A grand total of 256 days. Good news though that it seems they don't really care if you send passport size photos

Congrats! And yes my application had been delayed by months as I had also originally sent my photo in on non-photo paper. But no where did it say it had to be on photo paper - just that it didn’t need to be professionally taken.

Any suggestions folks.

Application (renewal) received Sept 28/21. Since then I have called Mirimachi a few times, and now Alberta CFO a few times. My money was taken on Oct 01/21.

Zero contact from CFO in the matter to date. I have initiated all contacts.

In last speaking with Alberta CFO approx 1 month ago, was advised that they were busy due to the hunting season (really?). It was also noted that there is a note to review my file deeper because I did answer yess to drug and alcohol questions. I'd have been crazy not to, as full disclosure of all my addictions was reviewed when I originally was issued my first PAL/RPAL after a 10 year prohibition. So "have you ever" = "yes"

Alberta CFO noted specifically n our last conversation that I wasn't being "punished" for being an alcoholic. I call BS. I'm over 16 years clean and sober. I am more suspicious that they are holding approval pending action with the OIC. In the meantime, they happily advised me that I am free to do SFA with any of my firearms other than keep them stored per storage regulations, until such time as they feel it appropriate to phone me and go over in person, my past histories.

In any other world, when I have paid a vendor for something 6 months ago, and they have taken my money; not hearing anything from them other than when I inquire and being told to phone back again, sometime, I'd call that fraud. I have receieved nothing for my money. Hell, even CGN pre-orders have more communication in the vast expanse of pre-order date, to delivery.

What are my options? Just sit and wait until I grow old for them? I know I am not the only on a long wait (just seeing a few posts above this one), but this is somewhat ridiculous, to say the least.

Hi question for anyone that can answer. My initial review For my PAL/RPAL says complete . Has for almost 3 weeks . I followed up via email to the CFO who did reply that my application was still with Central Processing ? Not sure what that is or means in terms of timelines? Any insight ? They gave me a number to call which naturally is never answered ...goes to " call again later " .

If you are squeaky clean ^^^^, be prepared to sit and wait. If anything less than squeaky clean, be prepared to really wait. Read back in this thread a bit, the time will come where you may want your references to call in, to help the process. You can find many posts referencing that.

I am suspicious that thing went into crawl mode, on the assumption that the OIC amnesty was ending, soon. Now that there has been an extension, it may (although I doubt) smooth things up.

Called the RCMP today and said my application is in the final stage before approval of my license, no photo scanned yet... and said give them a call next week if nothing advances.

Doesn't it usually go to the Provincial Firearms office first before getting approved?

Called a number of times to check on the status. Finally had enough and asked for the CFO extension number. After 2 days and about 40 redials to get through I was able to speak to someone who had the power to approve my renewal application on the spot.

Be patient, but also persistent. Ask for the CFO extension and ask them if there is anything holding up your renewal. Apparently they didn't know why I held a Restricted PAL, had to email them a copy of my range membership (even though I have bought and sold numerous pistols over the past years?).

Called today, my application is in the queue for a photo scan. RCMP agent told me, called back in a month

Hey saw my timelines look similar to yours . I'm in Ontario . They processed my CC charge Feb. 24th . Called today and she said my photo is being scanned and to call back in a few weeks for an update . Fingers crossed .

So I called my MP to get him, or his office, anyways, involved today.

Today is 6 months, and there is no legal reason/basis that I can interpret anywhere, why my renewal is not approved, at this time.

Let this be a lesson to all you kids out there. When you think you have done your time, and it is behind you - it is not. When you think that because you were approved after your prohibition, and that hurdle is in your mirrors - it is not. If you have 16+ years behind you of living a clean, sober, not even a violation warning to your name life means anything to the CFP and CFO - you are wrong.

I liked the old Alberta CFO better, who was just fine issuing me my PAl and RPAL based on a very frank and honest (not to mention thorough) accounting of my life of being a mofo.

My wife has never had any issues with the law, been waiting 15 months now. Called my MP last week, a staffer is working on it.

Ouch! Hope that gets things moving for you.

I'm suspicious that they were background using the loomong OIC amnesty end as a crutch, or something, and trying to drag things until that hit. That ship has now sailed.

Mine came today. Applied on line Aug 27. Request for a new photo (didn't like the on I supplied) in Nov, photo signed for reg mail Nov 28. Expired January xx three calls in Feb and Mar. Came in mail today. 7 long months.

First of all, glad that you turned your life around. I’m just wondering, and you don’t have to answer, but it’s food for thought… did you get a pardon / record suspension and/or was your past legal matter something which would require a “yes” answer? If you had a PAL before and are renewing it, that would mean that the prior application(s) only had the 5 year window, but now it’ll consider the entire lifetime. So in the past the answer could’ve been “no” but now would be “yes”, unless you had a pardon / record suspension.
