Palma 95 chamber dimensions

Hi all. I was hoping someone might have the chamber dimensions for the Palma 95 chamber used in the savage 12 Palma rifle especially neck length.

I just started precision and f class shooting last year as well as reloading. Luckily I had enough lapua brass that I did not need to resize or trim. Well as I get ready for the new season it is time to start case prep, including resizing and trimming, but am not sure of the optimal trim length.

I was instructed by shooters who know better than me to do a body size with a Redding body die to ensure consistent dimensions, then trim to 2.005. I've got a WFT trimmer and I'm very happy with it.

Since I have only been reloading for a year I have been doing a lot of research in the off season .. I know .. Sometimes this can be a bad thing:D

I know that chamber dimension does effect things such as neck diameter and bullet seating. In the case of the Palma 95 it has a tight neck diameter and short throat.

I read that sometimes it may be better not to trim to sammi min specs.
Keeping a slightly longer neck prolongs case life, supports the bullet more and depending on how long the throat is allows the bullet to be seated longer or shorter without effecting case capacity.

Should I take this into consideration or simply trim to the trim to size found in most manuals.
 
Having a neck that is too long, especially with a short throa,t can become a serious safety issue.

Every reloading manual I have states that case length should be between 2.005" and 2.015".
 
I realize that if the neck gets to long and intrudes into the throat that it can lead to an increase in pressure which could lead to a potentially dangerous situation.

It is my understanding though that not all chambers are cut to sammi specs. This is why it is good to know your actual chamber length. It may require you to trim the cases before reaching max sammi length or when trimming may allow you to keep the neck length longer then the trim as of length found in most reloading manuals which may improve round performance. This is why Sinclair has a case length gauge or people get their chambers cast. Below is a description of the chamber length gauge.

The Sinclair Chamber Length Gauges are designed so the handloader can determine the true length of his rifle's chamber when measuring from the bolt face to the end of the chamber's neck. This measurement will tell you how much excess case length your chamber may have over published trim lengths in reloading handbooks.

This is why I was wondering if anyone had the specs for the Palma 95 chamber that is used in the savage.
 
The .010" difference between 2.015" "max" and 2.005" "trim to length" is equal to about the thickness of 3 pieces of paper. My target rifles all have chambers cut with the .308 Obermeyer reamer. I have fired rounds with brass as long as 2.017" before trimming, but when it come time to trim I usualy trim to 2.000.

As long as you stay under 2.015" you should be good to go. However, more important than keeping under 2.015" is to keep your brass at a consistant length within a few thousands of an inch. So say your average case length is 2.008", try to keep this batch of brass together with brass between 2.006"-2.010".

I will trim the cases to the recommended length and keep them consistent.
