And the diameter of the pin, along with the shape of the tip etc. The main thing though, is indeed, the diameter of the hole. The whole idea of the small primer brass is supposed to be that the brass is stronger and allows higher pressures. Of course, higher pressure puts more strain on the primer cup. Small primer cups are, in some cases, a little weaker than the large primers, so that just makes it worse. Frankly, I am not a fan. I didn't see any advantage when we tried it in 1979, and I don't see any advantage now.
 
"Back in the day" I believe the strongest small rifle primer that handled the highest pressure the best was the Remington 7 & 1/2. It sure worked for my .222 and my .17 Remington AI.
