sooooo I'm not going to name any names at this time and I'm hoping I got not only what I thought I wasn't getting but even better than I was expecting.

Rewind to Friday feb 15. I spontaneously purchased a brand new stag 10 in .308win, planning to take it wolf hunting in the following morning.

It was late, the store actually stayed open late for me. I didn't even show up until 15
Min past closing. I can't say how greatful I was.

I didn't spend too much time going over the rifle itself, moreso looking at optics, mounts and accessories while I decided what calibre, which was the last thing I decided. Boom, I'm set.. home to get it setup.

While at the store I noticed the handguard didn't have any qd sockets, I was certain stags were integral. I commented the barrel looked longer than I'd expect, and was told it was a 20" pencil. I felt the heavy 6.5 and did not want the weight at all, which helped me settle on the 308 pencil as it will be carried afield. . I hadn't seen any mention of a 20" option but hey, I'm no stag expert.

So I get it home and notice the finishing on the handguard is dog ####. Hmm. I hadnt heard of that issue. Doesn't look like the pics I've seen from any retailer either.

So I stop at another store today to look for accessories and there just so happens to be a factory model on the counter. That's the handguard in all the pics. The barrel is 18" and noticeably thicker. Medium profile.

So I asked some questions, showed some pics of mine.

Mine is definitely not a factory offering.

So I call the store I got it from and it was confirmed it's not a factory assembled rifle.

I shoulda been told this beforehand. It also cost about $500 more than the other store.

Whatever. I don't care about the price, I don't really care about the handguard.

I do care about the performance. That's all I care about. I realize a pencil is not ideal for grouping in quick succession. I don't care about that. I want the one shot to land where expected. That's it.

Is this a quality barrel? How does it stack up to the factory barrel? I really don't care for the extra 2" to begin with.

The other slight issue is the bolt/carrier. At this time the make is unknown. There's no markings other than MP on the bolt shank.
This is only an issue as I'm having a 375 raptor barrel made, already paid for a month ago. Is this a decent quality bolt? With the make unknown, is this another expense I need to replace?

I hope I didn't pay all this extra for a lesser quality rifle. I don't want to return it but I will if that's the case.

I'm hoping. I got an upgrade for the extra money and the salesman simply forgot to mention it was an upgrade

Also to be clear, the price is about the same as most other retailers advertised prices. It just happens to be a lot more than the one I visited today.

My trip was postponed due to work. The rifle has not left the house, been modified or test fired.

If you want to sell the barrel please let me know. I would like to buy a pencil barrel strictly for weight reduction.
I have the original 18.5 inch heavy 308 barrel. It is accurate and a really nice shooter, but it needs to be lighter.(period)

Noted. I will keep this in mind, seeing how things go. Im hoping you are sol because the consensus is this barrel should be a nice upgrade. No offence. Lol.

But if it's a costly downgrade, I'm returning the rifle.

Shoot it first, no point worry about it when you haven't shot it yet?
my concerns are wasting a day or trip with a rifle that has low expectations, and whatever issues may arise trying to return a used rifle. I don't want to have to argue that it's not up to my standard for accuracy and the store argument that it's acceptable. I'd rather just return it before hand if the consensus is I've purchase a lesser than factory quality rifle.

Bring it back - they should have disclosed that it wasn’t a factory rifle.

I'm not upset that it's not factory or that it wasn't disclosed. That may have been a simple oversight.

I just want to know if the consensus is its downgraded quality. I'll be fully satisfied if it is an upgraded barrel.

I can't believe no one has any input on these barrels. I see there's a lot of psa talk on this forum as a decent cheap ar15 alternative but there's no talk about accuracy from even those platforms.
I find nothing relevant on the ole google either.

Now with this being said, I've come to the conclusion the handguard is aero precision according to the insignia but there is nothing on their site that matches.

I find no barrels like this on psa's website but faxon has an identical barrel picture wise. This barrel has no identification other than chambering.

The bolt/carrier looks identical to a psa bolt on psa's website.

If this is in fact a psa bolt, is it decent?

If the barrel is infact a faxon pencil, is it decent?

Uh that's the entire point of my post. You should have done your due diligence before buying.
Oh believe me I have spent hours and hours and hours reading up on the stags on numerous forums, google searches, reading all the reviews, all the threads, stags website, as well as Canadian retailers.

I'm just not one to think I know everything, so I figured there were options I was not aware of, in conjunction with the fact it was not disclosed.

I had no reason to believe anything other than there is options I'm not aware of. I thought it was still a stag barrel, and still a stag bolt carrier.

Im still waiting to find out exactly what's in this build as the shop doesn't even know and is still looking into it.

My Stag-10 has a 308 heavy barrel - Palmetto.
I didn't try any match or reloaded ammo.
But it shot nice 1.5" to 2" groups with Hirtenberg 1985 ammo.

I'm satisfied with mine, no regrets, but I paid what it is was worth, not more. It was a kit by IRUNGUNS.

PSA make value items, good quality at low prices. It's certainly not a premium item, but shouldn't be anything wrong with it. I'd be more concerned about who put it together, they may not know piss from paint.

Since it's got PSA stuff bolted on it's probably from IRunGuns. I think they sold Stag 10 builders kits a while back, before I got back into the hobby so I don't know much. I would start by checking the irunguns forum in the vendors section here, there may be details there about what options were available with the kits they brought in.

There's a cgn user that mentionned he was building for a local gun shop lately. Is it Brian65 or something like that? You could try to find these posts and pm him. With some luck he will tell you how he built it.

Will probably find more info on those barrels on a US forum where they have been available for a long time.

Sounds like it has a brownells bolt, you should post some pics of what you have.

Buying a new rifle and going hunting with it the next morning is a bit of a disaster waiting to happen.... anyone else kinda get a weird vibe after reading that?

MP marked bolt.

You have a stag 10 upper and lower with Palmetto parts.

This was an IRUNGUNS kit.

Palmetto are quality parts, deffinately not low end or bargin parts...mind you not high end parts either.

This setup will be perfect for hunting purposes

I think either barrel is not the best but are equal.
As for the BCG, I found that the Brownells to be the better of the two.
I think the bigger issue is that , you overpaid.
The IRG packages were cheaper than the Stag factory rifles.
So yes , I’d return it and buy the factory rifle, for $500 less.

And I think it’s Griffen 86 who’s doing all the builds, for his local store.
He has a sticky on the stag 10

Palmetto may be good, but they sell for the lowest price, on the market.
