Pan Am IPSC Shotgun Championships.

Pan American Shotgun event Day 1 report (some video's as well)

Well, day 1 of the tournament down (9 stages out of 30) at the Rockcastle Shooting Centre in Park City, Kentucky and I have to say that the people here certainly know how to put on an event. The supplied lunches and dinners have been spectacular - all you can eat home cooked hot meals that can keep a team going!

After a slight hiccup on the first stage (I was on to the backup gun after my ejector wouldn't let go of the first 2 shells, and 66 seconds to get the first one out of the gun!). Tons of steel (poppers and plates) and our first exposure to the A4 targets made for an interesting day. One thing that they seem to love here are no-shoots RIGHT next to the targets (steel, A4 and even clay no-shoots!!).

The stages so far have been great, into the woods right along a golf course with a fabulous view. The heat has been unreal, and the humidity just unbelievable - by the time you get to the stages after a 5 minute golf cart ride you practically need a change of clothes! It's been a real treat seeing some of the international teams shoot and learning about the state of shooting sports in their home countries. The one thing that I've learned is that I need to learn how to reload MUCH faster if I want to advance up the leaderboard.

Off to bed now to be prepared for day 2 - further updates to follow as the event goes on. Here's a couple of videos (one of myself and one of Stormbringer) to give the flavour of the event.

What an AMAZING event...........

30 Shotgun Stages over THREE and a HALF days of shooting.

100% of the stages were shot in the woods and on the golf course!!

I cannot praise this event enough.

Great stages.
Some FANTASTIC shooters! Rodger Karp from Finland was a god with his 870!!!

The Sagia Shotguns were fun to watch.

Great food............FREE BEER and FREE BOURBON!!

Lonedrone has vids of all the stages I hope he will post shortly.

Congrats to 7.62mm for his 11th place finish at 73.37%. I managed a 68.16% to clinch 12th spot. I guess we will have to shoot more than one match in a year to compete with the guys who shoot this on a weekly basis. It sure gave us plenty of ideas to work on and even more in terms of stage design.
We have 3 years to prepare for the next one!!

The pic above shows my "Miracle" clay with a single pellet that just scratched the side. I thought I had missed but upon inspection I had scored a hit!! Note the close proximity of the While NO SHOOT clay to the two Target clays in the video. That gives you some idea of the challenge these stages presented.

While I missed the Nationals to shoot this match.......I would do so again in a heartbeat. A Pan Am event only 9 driving hours away........it does not get better!

I have to concur with everything Storm has already stated.

Having never shot a Lvl 4 match, I learned a ton about the importance of the mental aspect of our sport. Definitely have to work on keeping focused. I made some silly/avoidable errors that cost me a couple spots in the rankings. Oh well, it can only improve my performance for next time!

Linda Chico, Match Director, deserves yet another thank you for her efforts at organizing this event. I can't think of a single thing that I was displeased with in terms of execution. Thank you!

Park Mammoth Resort/Rockcastle Shooting Center, is going to be a name that becomes a common destination for almost all shooters, of any discipline. The new owners have an excellent attitude, and even better concept for their facility. Their hospitality was second to none, and anyone heading there, will not soon forget the experience!

It was a pleasure to represent Canada, at this first Pan American Shotgun Championship, and I know I for one, will be looking hard at attending the next one!

How did you guys find the roads/paths leading to some of the stages...?
Back in April some of 'em were pretty slick and/or rough to traverse..
'Wish I had a 4wheel drive on some of 'em...:D

'Bet you're spoiled now for any other matches :D :D :D

The roads are in need of repair that is certain. It was a very well run event. The biggest challenge despite the stages was the HEAT!!

38-39 C with humidity off the charts.
