I want to try pan lubing my cast bullets for my 45 colt and 45/70. I have been researching this on CAST boolits website. I would like to know what people here in CANADA are using. I see beeswax is rather expensive, and is main ingredient in most recipes. What are your thoughts/experience on this.

~25mL STP oil treatment (contains Teflon)
1 regular tub of Vaseline (13oz/368g tub)
5 crayons of the same colour (just to colour it)
~1L of candle wax

The usual method of standing the bullets in a silicone baking pan. Pour molten mix to just above top grease groove. Let cool overnight (maybe less since it's not summer anymore; still my first year doing it). Flip pan, pull out hardened sheet (quite a bit softer than pure candle wax but still hardish), push out bullets from behind with my fingers.

When at ~20'C the mixture is firm but will flex and take a finger indent quite easily. Not as soft as a lot of the black powder lube I see (which is designed to be able to be applied with fingers) but softer than candle wax.

I use it for my 500gr .45-70 bullets and find they shoot as clean as jacketed projectiles up to ~1450fps (as fast as I have pushed them.)

I am loading .45 Colt and .45ACP and use vegetable shortening with a bit of bee's wax, I am applying it by hand right now but am going to try pan lubing a batch. My concoction is 8 parts vegetable shortening (Crisco) to 1 part bee's wax (at $15.00/Kg it is not expensive). This works well with black powder and smokeless...no leading of the bore at all. I don't use petroleum based products at all for this purpose, just to keep the rust away after cleaning (gun oil).
I bought a kilogram of bee's wax a couple of years ago and have plenty left so I can send you some if you PM me your address.... if you want to try it out.

You can make your own "NRA Formula" using Beeswax and "Dralox 350" (or just Dralox) - typically you go 50/50, but you can adjust the proportions, add other stuff (e.g. Crisco, parrafin (candle) wax, crayons, Murphy's Oil Soap, etc.). It all works.

You can buy the Dralox here, from one of our sponsors: http://dragonbulletlube.com/products.php#dralox350

There's no subject related to shooting cast bullets with more (almost religious) opinions than bullet lube. You get people offended when their specific recipe is not embraced by the masses (you already saw that on castboolits), but in truth, you can use practically anything slippery that will adhere to a bullet and it will work - more or less.

I use beeswax and olive oil and a small amount of STP. Works well. The 50/50 mix still made it a bit too gooey so I reduced the oil and all is well. If u want to make it seem like a day at the beach, substitute coconut tanning oil for the olive..Smells quite pleasant!(I wouldnt suggest a steady diet of this as who knows what else is in it). You can get fancy and add extract used for scented candles in whatever scent u want and fire away..Nothing like touching off a few rounds and having the place smell like fresh baked cookies!
