Papa's Remington 725 in .308 Norma Mag

Yeah, thanks for the tip. I had to do quite a bit of research about Norma, and it seems to me that it's pretty rare to have a rifle chambered in this round.

Thank you! I'm super happy with it. I'm bummed out that I couldn't post pictures but I'll just do that later on. Glad to hear the Norma Mag is still being used out there!

Will do Ted. The next step is a reloading dye. Apparently EE has some (I don't have approval yet) but so does Prophet River Firearms. I'm going to wait for my approval to come in before I pull the trigger (pun intended!)

I am certain I have enough 308 Norma Magnum cases to last me for the rest of my life.
FWIW, there are 3 iterations of factory 308 Norma Magnum brass, Pics below.

It is a very well-balanced 30 cal magnum. I have shot a half-dozen moose at over
450 yards with it. EE

EagleEye - there was a write-up I read that the original Norma 7x61 Sharpe and Hart had that "Re" on the headstamp - subsequent versions did not - alleged to have thinner walls and shallower head - head stamped as 7x61 Super - alleged to be made from different alloy, and possibly different heat treat than the older "Re" stuff, but claimed to be "just as strong". Do you have any reason to know or think that the 308 Norma Mag Re is different case than the 308 Norma Mag case??

If memory serves the RE was to tell people the brass was reloadable. The later Super cases gave slightly higher case capacity(thinner walls) to allow heavier charges and equal factory 300 win mag velocities. - dan

P; The cases with the "Re" in the headstamp average a bit heavier than either of the two later issued cases. For example, I have 50 of these older cases
They average 242 grains. The next type, headstamped "308 Norma Magnum", average 234 grains. and the latest with the headstamp
"Norma 308 Norma Mag" average 220 grains. [ these are all unprimed cases]. The latest cases are lighter by 21 grains on average, enough to make a
difference on internal capacity. Dave.

Interesting bit of trivia regarding the 308 Norma Magnum. Norma's original 308 NM factory ammo was pretty warm.
I managed to find a guy with a chronograph, and ran some early factory rounds through it. They were 180 grain
"Dual-Core" advertised at 3100 fps. My 24" barrelled Parker-Hale Safari Deluxe averaged 3140 with this ammo.

When Winchester brought out their 300 Win Mag, with ammo to match, the advertised MV was 3020 fps. I only had
the opportunity to chronograph one lot of the early Winchester 180 grain Power-Point. It averaged 3000 in a 24" tube.

Norma later tamed down it's 308NM factory ammo a bit, as did Winchester it's 300 Win Mag stuff. It is now
advertised at 2960 fps. I have not 'graphed any recent manufactured Winchester ammo

Of some interest, I chronographed some Hornady 180 grain Factory Interlocks that were only doing 2880 fps
out of a 24" Krico rifle. (30-06 velocities).

I have here a box + a few rounds of recent Norma factory ammo [180 grain ORYX] It is advertised at 900 mps [2950 fps]
From my custom McGowen 26" barrelled M700, it 'graphs at 3022 avg. My favorite handloads, using either MRP or IMR7828
make 3080/3060 with a 180 grain Scirocco II. I have gone higher, but since it seems the happiest right there,
I reasoned it will be just fine. No animal I shot with it has complained, either. :) Dave.

That sounds like good loads Dave. I run RL22 lately, though I still have a few pounds of MRP tucked away. Under a 180 or 200 gr partition, it does everything my 300 Win Mags or my old 30-338 could do. - dan
