I have been loading up some handicap shells using some Federal Paper hulls. 11/8 oz of lead and about 18.5+ grains of 700X and a Federal wad. Now this appears to be quite a heavy load but man does it shoot like a light one using those paper hulls. Is there a reason for this that I am unaware of or is it just a property of that type of hull ?? I also noticed that Federal still sells paper shells for trap and other shotgun sports although I have never seen any for sale around here.

Have you chronyed the load? It may not be quite as heavy as you think. I pulled this from another site.

Taken from the Federal pamplet dated 2004.

Federal Paper, 18 gr. 700X, 12so/12s3 wad, 209A (slightly hotter than f209), 1oz shot, with a velocity of 1280 and pressure 8100.

Federal Paper, 18 gr. 700X, 12s3 wad, 209A, 1 1/8 oz., 1145fps/9,400 PSI

Federal Paper, 19 gr. 700X, 12s3 wad, 209A, 1 1/8 oz., 1200fps/10,100 PSI
So you are around the 3 dram mark at 18.5 grains depending on the components you are using. I've never loaded Federal paper mostly because they are a 6 crimp shell and I can't bother changing crimp dies on my load.

I've shot my share of Federal and Challenger paper and while it's said they shoot lighter I haven't noticed a signficant difference when compared to shells of equal velocity and shot weight.

Is it possible that your powder choice is contributing to lower recoil? 700X has a somewhat slower burn rate being similar to Green Dot.

Federal papers seem to crimp well with what ever crimp die that you use.I just run them through my SS machine with the 8 point starter and they end up with a perfect crimp.Go figure!

Claybuster, that is good data that you got there. In fact the data on the IMR may be a little hot. I think that yours is somewhat more realistic. What site was that ?? I shot two different loads today, using the components you have listed ( 12s3 wad, fed 209A): one using my #30 MEC bushing and weighting the charges ( 17.4-17.8 grains) and they were a dream to shoot, chrony'd at 1150 fps. The second load was using my #31 bushing ( charges weighted about 18 grains + ) and it was also a dream to shoot, chrony'd at 1200 fps.

Now if I compare that to a 2 3/4 dram winchester shell there is a big difference in recoil, IMHO. The paper Federal load is even nicer than my handloads using winchester components. Is it because feds are a straight wall hull ??

I have specific crimp parts for paper hulls. My MEC 9000 was a little work to get it working well with them but it turns out a perfect shell every time.

Anyway I sure like these hulls and loads.

The wifes aunt phoned me up at xmas and said she was sending up a couple boxes of her late husbands old shotgun shells that she found in the basement for me to shoot and get rid of. Another relative dropped them off at my place and what was 2 boxes ended up being 2 cases ( the old 20 box cases ) of 3 dram 7 1/2 Federal papers. Well merry xmas to me.:D :dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:

Its been alot of years since I shot any paper hullls and when I shot some at a turkey shoot last weekend I remembered why they were so popular back in the day.

They smell good too! :)

Federal still lists them on their website so they must still be in production but I have never seen any for sale. I have about 500-800 once fired hulls so I am going to load them up for handicap. They only last about 2-3 reloads and them they start to get pin holes where the brass meets the paper.

Bogman what are you doing with your hulls ???

Lawry's in Caledonia (yes THAT Caledonia) carry them. They are spendy however compared to other target loads. I believe the last flat I bought was circa $75 as I recall and that was before price of lead went insane.

Hey claybuster don't swet over what crimp starter die you have in , just load em up. For some reason they crimp up great. The only thing I would guard against is loading so many that you are figuring for longer term storage. I have had some that were stored for 4-6 months and have had some crimps pop open.

And yes they do smell great when shot. Especially with Red Dot . Leave them in the truck as air fresheners until you need them in the house to re-load !

See Ya on the field
Good Shooting !

I don't find to many Fed paper hulls on the range, but if they are clean and dry, and appear once fired, I'll pick them up. They do load and shoot nice. Crimps have been no problem.

And I love the smell of the papers, to bad they don't last as long for reloads.:)

Bogman,

If it isn't a hassel I would really like them. In fact when you are finished them I will pay for shipping and your time to get them up here. BUT...you should come up for our first of two PITA shoots in April ??

Don't forget that is a two day shoot at the VGC in March. 500 targets plus any shoot off's. Better bring lots of them.:)

I hope the weather clears a bit by then:rolleyes: ...see you there.

Yup. 300 targets Saturday, 200 Sunday.

I find the trick with doubles is to figure out where the first target is going to be, by using the background as a reference point, for my gun hold. You pick the right spot and you shouldn't have to move the barrel by more than a few inches, shoot, swing to the second target. I prefer not to shoot as squad leader in doubles, as it gives you a chance to look at a few more targets, before you shoot.

For some reason VGC dosen't bother to use presquad.com, otherwise I would suggest we sign up for the same squad. Perhaps if we meet prior to signing up?

Yes that sounds great rifleman. I may even phone Gerry and get him to sign us up. Closer to the event I will e-mail you. Now I am getting excited for the PITA season.
