Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has had trouble with the restricted mags on a Para 1640?

I ordered my first new toy (Para 1640) last October to have it in time to try this year's IDPA season. With the backorder I didn't end up receiving until this February. I ordered an extra 3 mags just so if I do have any mag problems, I won't be left high and dry during any competitions. Unexpectedly, a couple of those mags did not allow the mag catch to engage. This didn't concern me too much as 5 minutes with a dremmel notching the hole in the mag 0.5mm solved my problem. No biggie I thought, my mags must have been on the edge of allowable tolerances.

The real surprise came when I loaded the mags. The plastic base on the bottom failed on all the mags. I found it impossible to load them to max 10rd capacity without causing them to fail. The remaining mag eventually failed at the range even though I was loading it to 5 rounds max. Now all I'm left with is a cumbersome single shot and 5 broken magazines.

Has anyone else seen failures on the base plate of their restricted para mags?
The construction of them look quite flimsy - all you have are 3 small plastic tabs in shear against the follower spring. Importer is thinking I either got a batch of poor plastic, or they didn't trim the springs down from the full capacity length. Either way, it was a surprise after dropping $1600 on something I expected I shoot of the box. The good news, I haven't seen an issue with the para even though I could only put 42rounds through the damn thing before my mags failed.

So far, I've sent the pile of broken mags off to the dealer and I'm waiting on the importer to process them. It's been a month with no word - wondering if I'll have my stuff back to at least tack part of some of the events this season.

Failure of these plastic tabs is common after a lot of use and a lot of drops to concrete. This is also one of the very few magazines in existence that might be negatively affected by being kept loaded.

At least two different aftermarket floorplates - machined from aluminum alloy - have been manufactured to fit these magazines. M.A.S. and Viper, IIRC. You will find them via a WTB placed on the parts and bits EE.

One of these, combined with the correct internal parts, will fix your problem.

For P16-40/P14-45. Eliminate your Para 10round mag problems, and throw away those plastic bases. Replace brittle plastic bases on Para 10 round magazines. Easy Installation, NO FITTING REQUIRED!

Key Benefits
Steel locking surfaces & alum body for maximum strength
Fits ALL magwells even with the base cap fitted
No need to butcher your valuable mags.

^^^ you should have these anyways for competitive shooting.

My para 16-40 is actually a little loose, and I wish my mags held up another 1mm or so.

Pretty loose quality control at para.

Thanks guys. Looks like the aftermarket floorplate is exactly what I need - Funny my dealer didn't know about them.

There's much to be desired when factory mags won't even last the first trip to the range. I can't blame Para entirely, as I doubt the full capacity mags would have this issue. Things get complicated when 10rd restrictions come into play...
