One of our new members has his heart set on a 1911 in .45 and doesn't have $1000 ti. Looking at parausa GIexpert. Is it painted? Aside from the trigger front are there plastic bits and pieces, or aluminum? I can accept some plastic like on the 1991A1 by Colt(a members gun had 10Lb. trigger pull, but put 5 into 1.5" at 25 yd) , but want to know in advance. Thanx

Para Ordnance doesn't have a particularly good reputation. I would consider another one of the other entry-level models on the market:

I have a P 14-45 Ltd and I shot a lot through it. Never had a single problem except for the plastic mag release that let go after a lot of magazine changes. I changed it for the metal one and here I go again.
But both Para-Ordnance and North Sylva are on the slow side (to say the least) when it comes to answer customers requests.

They are not known for their 1911 's but Smith and Wesson build a very nice 1911 for the money and features. The fit and finish on all I have handled is very good and my .45 DK model is quite accurate + eats any ammo. I'm at about 3000 rounds and no misfires yet with cheap ammo. I looked around a ton before I got it.
I've owned a Para GI Expert .45 ACP, and I currently own a Para Limited Edition .45 ACP. They're fairly well made pistols but they're not worth the money you pay for them. I and quite a few others rate Para's warranty service as very poor.
If I were you (but I'm not), I would spend my hard-earned money on a STI Trojan or Spartan in the calibre of your choice.
I own three STI pistols and I can attest to their superior craftmanship and accuracy out of the box, plus their warranty service is second to none. STI makes a mighty fine gun for the money you spend and you won't be disappointed.

I paid $550 for my GI expert, from Badger Supplies. It's fine, I wanted a reliable, affordable entry level 1911, that wasn't a Norc. I do believe I've got what I wanted, and what I paid for. I've actually very happy with it, it is my first 1911, so I'm maybe not the best judge.
Gotta agree with Danny on the Remington R1, it's worth looking into. A friend from the army just picked one up and said the value is excellent for the price - I haven't used it yet myself though so I'm basing this on the experience of others.
