I have a Para-Ordnance 16-40 Limited I bought new this year, and I'm getting surface rust on the beaver tail and on the pistol grip portion of the frame around the plastic grip plates. Anybody else have this problem? And if so, what have you done to stop it from continuing to reappear?
The rust is caused by salts left on the gun when you sweat. Clean and oil after every time you use it.
You don't need to go overboard cleaning, wipe it down with a solvent and apply a GOOD anti corrosive or CLP. Most regular gun oils have poor rust inhibiting qualities.
I generally clean with MPro-7 (also marketed as Hoppes Elite) and Eezox. Even if you don't have time to clean, just spray/wipe with anti corrosive. Rust can form very quickly on unprotected steel, as quickly as minutes and if you note from the salt spray tests in the above, even oils don't always protect very well.
