Hi CGN,

I found an older Parker Hale 8mm rifle in the house and was hoping to give it an update. The action and bbl are in great shape but the stock has seen better days.

Does anyone know where I can source a modern fibreglass M85 stick for these? Maybe Canadian likes MDT Orr cadex? AI would be good too as it was after all made in Birmingham UK.

It would be great for my son to shoot his Grandfathers gun. However it needs a facelift.
I'm a Remington 700 guy so this is a steep learning curve for me. Any help would be great. Thanks

A modern fiberglass “M85” style fiberglass would be a McMillan “McHale” pattern stock, which can be ordered with various options but the basic version is probably going to run at approx $700 Cdn. That would give you a M85 inspired look although the M85 had a enclosed top action with a flat bottom and slab sides which looks a little different than the 1200 series Parker Hales most of us have. I am guessing that is what yours is, which is basically a large ring 98 Mauser action.

If this a 1200 series then look for stocks made to fit a 98 Mauser as a start, I’m not sure how many modern chassis systems are out there that are made for that family of actions.

I've looked and looked for a stock for the 98 style actions, which includes the Parker Hale 1200 series. No go with MDT or Cadex, or any other chassis manufacturer that I've found. Boyds offer stocks inletted for them. Hogue makes an overmold, with both pillars, and full aluminum bedding block - but I haven't found a source for them in Canada. I had one years ago on a 98, and stupidly sold it. Promag also lists an Archangel style for the 98, but again, I haven't been able to find a source for one in Canada. Good luck on the search. Keep us updated - cause you're not the only one looking.

Parker hale actions are M98 actions.
The PH safari is a Captured K98 sporterized.
The Parker-Hale 1200 comes with a few stock options, standard and a beavertail fore-end. Cast Alum trigger guard
The Parker-Hale 1200C is with the removable Mag. Cast Alum trigger guard ish
The M85 action is a different beast. Like the M85 target rifle. M98 bolt and modified action.
There are some M98 actions with M85 safety.

Can't forget the 1100 series

1100 lightweight ..243, .308, .30-06, ??
1100 Magnum .375H&H, .458 Win Mag

Schnabel forestock and sweet woodgrain... Checkered. Cast Alum trigger guard

If this works - could anyone recommend a bottom metal that would allow for AI mags?

CDI Precision makes one as does Pacific Tool and Gauge. The PTG one says as it is a long action spacing it uses AICS 300 WM magazines. Not sure about the CDI part or who sells them up here.

Post a pix of your rifle. Is it heavy a heavy barrel target type rifle? or just a sporter?. Also need to know your budget as what you're requesting is no inexpensive. If you want to use AI mags then the receiver mag well needs machining, You could covert the action to 1200C (clip feed) and use the Parker Set up however I'd have to see some pictures. Ron

PT&G has DBM for 98 Mauser however it requires machining the receiver and inletting the stock. Also use Accurate Mags in 300 Win Mag so feeding 308 most likely would be an issue. There are 4 pix's on their website if somebody wants to download them for folks to see. Not a good option IMO. Ron

I ordered one of these units for a project. Didn't use it for the reasons mentioned. So, it has been sitting unused ever since.

CDI makes them to accept both short and long action magazines. I ordered one from Gary at Bighorn. And yes, there is some milling required on the action and stock.

Cheap way to high capacity mag would be standard 98 military guard with a repro trench mag. Would be minimal work to get that sorted out. Mag would need a spacer installed and the follower shortened.
I wouldn't be throwing a ton of money into this project myself.

Thanks for all the help. Ive decided to postpone the facelift till the new year and focus on Rem 700 projects for now.

Its a heavy barrel, and currently Im using the AI mags in 308, so I'm not in a rush to do work on a custom bottom metal right now. Ill keep this thread alive and post pictures of the boyds stock upgrade when it comes.
