Parker-Hale 1200?

As far as I know they are one of the commercial mauser's that came out in 60's and 70's. They may still make them...don't know for sure. I don't think they were ever a really high end rifle but never heard of anyone having much for problems with them either. I think the Canadian military use or used to use them as the base for their issue sniper rifle. I used to see many at gun shows for $250.00 to $375.00 in very good condition. Only catridges seemed to be 243, 308, 270, 30-06...but not much of a problem as all those are pretty nice cartridges. There was a Midland-Parker Hale I think that had a bolt a lot like an old Springfield 1903 bolt that I would stay away from. Not saying they are dangerous or anything(I never fired one) just the fit/finish on those was pretty bad. Almost as bad as Norinco, maybe worse.

and 308 norma mag as well as 6.5x55. no longer made. also they made them for CIL . and a leser grade than the 1200 super was the 1000. the midland was a real low grade and a model 81 i think that was the safari grade. made in spain ass in england

I had a 2100 Midland in .308. Worked great, shot well. Sold it (now regretting it) to my Bro-in-law because I wasn't using it much anymore. The only downfall was the fixed (hinged floorplate) mag. Never had any fit/fininsh or quality concerns. Nice wood too!

I belive there are a couple on Elwwpd Epps' site.
A parker hale and a C.I.L.

They have Sile stocks, which are well made Italian with rosewood grip caps and forend tips sometimes.

I have a few of them midland similar to mod 1200 the sloppiest fiting bolt assembly I ever seen but very efective best feeding mechanism I have seen I built a custom rifle in 22br rem from one of them it shoots 1/4 "groups all day.
They have great triggers made by timney for parker hale as far as I am concerned they are great guns in the field and are reasonably accurate as factory calibers .

Are Parker-Hale 1200's good rifles? Price I could expect to pay for one in VG condition?

There is a write-up on a P-H Model 1200 in 300 Win Magnum by Steve Gash in the October 2005 issue of Handloader. He manages to get 30-06 ballistics from his handloads. a 1990 US retail price of $699.95 is given.

The PH1200TX was the basis for the C3 Sniper Rifle.
The going rate for TX's seems to be around $700.
I have seen 1200's going in the $300.-400. range.

Many guys snub the Parkers, for the $$ they can be great guns. They are capable of very good accuracy, have decent adjustable trigger and as others have stated are based on 98 Mauser actions, so are controlled feed guns. The only real draw back to many is that the detachable mags that most came with a real hard to find and expensive when you can find them. I have had several 7 mags and 308 normas and found all to be very good shooters.

I picked up a 1200 C model (detachable clip) in 308 from a respected board member last year. This is the model with the rakish styling - rosewood caps, white spacers, angular fore-end, etc. Got a chance to shoot it briefly last year with some old handloads - nothing special, so it went back in the cabinet.
Last week, I built up some reloads in different bullet weights and powders, and went at it again. I was very pleasantly surprised - using RE15 and Hornady 165/150's, it was shooting cloverleafs at 100y. Guess whats going with me hunting this fall!
Also noticed that the PH's have enough give in the extractor to allow push feeding of a cartridge into the chamber. In all - I consider the rifle to be tremendous value, given the features - accurate, detachable mag, iron sights c/w sight hood, modified CRF, etc.
Now, if I could just get used to the styling of the rifle...

Some of the extracors are cut to push feed, and some are not.

They can really shoot, I don't think I ever shot one with handloads that
wouldn't hold MOA or better.

I have worked with twenty or so of them over the years, handloading ammo and bedding them etc. for fellas.

Here is the diagram from the C3A1 manual showing the Extractor mod.

I've had a 1200 Safari in .243 for a couple years now. The barrel has a very slow twist rate, so it doesn't shoot the heavier bullets very well. Doesn't like anything bigger than 58gr Hornadys. I've been thinking about putting a new heavy barrel on it, just need somebody to talk me out of/into it
