Father-in-law gave me a nice PH Safari in .243. Trouble is he lost the bolt 20+ years ago when he moved. Who are the likely sources for a bolt or is the action common enough one can be retrofitted from a different rifle?

Rifle is a sporting version of a '98 Mauser. First choice would be a sporting Mauser bolt. If it came to it, a military bolt could be altered and fitted. Either way, headspace would have to be checked and adjusted as necessary.

Good luck trying to find one, I can't even find an extra magazine for my 1200 Super Clip. Parts are pretty rare and whoever has one won't give it up.

I agree with Tiriaq too. If it's an early version, the bolt shroud will able be correct. Later shrouds don't have the safety on it as the safety was changed to a sliding safety on the right side of the receiver. Anyways, both will use the same basic bolt.

I just did a quick test for you.

I got my Parker Hale 1200C, and my Spanish Mauser. The bolts from both rifles fit and function fine in the others. I tried cycling some .308 snap caps in the Parker Hale with the bolt from the 8mm Spanish Mauser, and it worked fine. The only thing which doesn't work is the safeties.

Definitely get it checked by a gunsmith before using, but you should be able to swap bolts.

Try Mil Arms in Edmonton. They might have an old military bolt in their store that could be used as a start point for your rifle. As stated, you would need to have the headspace checked, as well as doing something with the bolt handle, safety etc.
