A few years ago I bought a 284 win reamer so I decided it had to be used at one point so I built this rifle thinking I might use it in my stand or when overlooking some of the fields behind the house.
I made a 4 groove 10 twist barrel for it 26" long with a rem varmint contour the action is a parker hale with a timney trigger that I trued up and sitting in a fajen laminate stock.
Now if I can get some brass to give it a try with some 140's maybe I would like to use it for a deer rifle unless someone invites me on a moose hunt lol

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good bullet and load for deer .

Nice looking rifle!
Pretty much any premium hunting bullet of your choice and either 4831 or 4350 for powder. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to hunt moose with a 7mm 140r TTSX going 3200FPS.
Your 26" barrel is going to allow you to nip at the heels of factory 7mm rem mag speeds no problem.

Very nice build Coyote. I love the 284 win chambering. My browning is a short action and I have to seat the bullets deep to fit the magazine, so the longer premium bullets don't work well in my rifle. Sierra and hornady 140 gr bullets backed by a near max charge of H4831sc has produced good accuracy in my rifle.

Picked up some 140gr nosler accubond from a friend of mine to try if only I had brass I would hit the range this afternoon , have some 4831 sc and 4350 to try.
Anyone in my area have brass give me a shout I'm 1/2 hour north of Moncton.

Nosler makes 6.5-284, if you can find a box, just run it through a die.

Pete there was some 284 win federal blue box at the local outfitter and I called 1 day to late a friend of mine has 284 brass and is on vacation right now , just hoping to get my hands on some sooner.
Never thought of the nosler stuff thanks for the heads up.

I havent tried the Nosler brass yet myself, I've got plenty win brass. I saw a box of nosler last wk and thought it would be a good alternative though.

Win brass, RL 19, fed 215 primer, Barnes 140 TSX or TTSX. Seat them 20-30 thou off the lands. Mine pushes them 3080 fps. Have killed more than 30 head of game with this combo, very effective!

Here are a few groups I shot today with some 150gr nosler ballistic tips with 54.5 gr of Rl 22 it worked great with 2875fps and no pressure signs.
At 100m it made a ragged 5 shot hole and at 300m a bit over an inch with 3 shots .
It also shot really good with 140 noslers 4831 and N150 , next time out maybe over the weekend I will try it at 600 and see if it stays together .

Running them through the chrono they were mostly about 20 fps spread a bit more than I like so maybe I am going to try and tweak the load a bit.

I also ran some nosler 120's to see what kind of speed I could get out of them and 3260 + was no problem with some 4350 type surplus powder that I have lots of , it also grouped well at 100m .

Tanks guys , I just picked up some hornady 160's that I am also going to test if I can make it back to the range over the weekend.

Btw Matt I'm rifling a few 1-9 twist 4 grooves right now and it seems like the optimum twist for the 180 berger hybrids from what some of the f-open guys are saying , now another shooter I spoke with would like a 8.5 like you mentioned.

From Sierra Infinity for 140 grain:

Accuracy Load: XMR-4350/ 50.9grs. 2700fps/ 2266ft. lbs.
Hunting Load: Varget/ 48.3grs. 2900fps/ 2615ft. lbs.

There was nothing listed above 2900 fps.
In my 280 Rem I exceeded 3000 with the Barnes 140 grain TTSX and Sierra maxed at 2800.

Excellent accuracy. What is the overall weight? Careful not to sink in some "Swamp Donkey Marsh"!

Horsman the gun weighs 12 lbs with the scope and I am only going to use it in my stand and overlooking some fields :) I got a 7 lbs gun to carry .
As far as speed goes the shorter the straight bearing part of the bullet is the faster they seem to be pushed.
The noslers I tried have a long bearing surface compared to some vld's .

Well I am going moose hunting with it tomorrow morning a guy I know had a moose tag and no hunting partner so off we go.
I loaded some 150gr nosler ballistic tips and mounted a new Sightron 4-12 tactical and have to say I am very impressed with the scope, for an under $300 scope I cant believe how clear it is and how well it tracks and repeats.

I honestly have to give this scope a 2 thumbs up I got my zero and from 100 yds to 685 yds I hit everything in between returned it to zero and was dead on where I started off.
