This rifle was hunted hard over the years by my brother in law. This project started when he saw my new gunstock that I bought for a project. After fondling it he asked if it would fit his gun.I said yes it probably will.
When I stripped his rifle down it was full of spruce needles and grime. It took a week to get barrel scrubbed clean. As can be seen the stock was cracked everywhere.

His barrel was pitted the first 1.5" at muzzle. Probably from bad weather then not cleaning.
I cut it off and split it to see what it looked like.

I sanded polished then reblued his action and barrel. Floor plate was for my own project.

I cut barrel threads and made a thread protector if he doesn't want the stainless muzzle brake on when hunting.

I then cut off the bolt knob and threaded handle. His bolt was so close to scope it was hard to grip it.
I made one tactical style and one round style a little bit longer. He can choose which one he want.

This shows how close it is.

Here is a picture of the gun with stock. Its a Boyds varmint thumbhole stock.

I went to gun range yesterday to try it out. All I had was ammo for my own gun but got it on paper.
After some tweaking with loads it will probably get better. I don't know what load he is shooting.
This is a group at 100 meters.

His Zeiss scope was also sent out for repair as it would fog up. Very good service from Canadian dealer.
Scope was cleaned, resealed and filled with nitrogen again at no cost except initial shipping cost to them.
I don't think he will recognize his old gun any more. I'm posting this as a inspiration for those that think about doing something with their old gun to spiff it up. Hope you enjoyed.

Nice job! I have a PH and now you have me wondering if I should pull it out of its stock to check for cracks; I do really like the PH stock, though. The bolt is the only thing I dislike because you must then use high rise rings and even then, as you noted, it is close to the scope - not a lot of fun if you are wearing gloves.
