Fixing up a Parker Hale 1200C super clip..in .308 win for a fellow..the guy just got it a short while ago, never fired it, and thought it was .30-06...the caliber stamping on these rifles is under the barrel, which of course the stock hides unless removed...He assumed this because of the stamping on the mag... for .30-06 or .270....but the rifle is a .308...will a .308 round fit and cycle in this mag, or will I have to get him another mag... if I need another mag for this rifle...how hard are they to come by?

Thanks...

Couple of things to consider.

Number one, Parker Hale made rifles chambered in both .308 Winchester and .308 Norma Mag. Make sure the rifle is indeed a .308 Winchester.

Number two. The easiest and most surefire way to test magazine compatibility would be to cycle some .308 snap caps or dummy rounds through the rifle using that magazine (please let me know if this works).

Number three. Parker Hale magazines are damn near unobtainable. On the odd chance you do find one be prepared to pay $150 plus.

Like VIPH says the only way to know is to try it, my 243 PH super 1200 C magazine had a block in the rear IIRC, and of coarse a shorter follower, but the long mag may work fine. The reason he has a different magazine is because those things drop mags out under recoil about every third or fourth time they're fired with a full magazine. Lost 2 from my 7mag before getting rid of it, and the 243, for Rem 700s. Even back then a new mag was a days wages for me. This is also, I'm sure, the reason why they are so rare, most of them are laying in ditches and scattered about the bush.

Oh yes, It is a .308 win....stamped on the barrel.. I don't own any .308's myself...but I'll have to get some ammo /dummy's anyway, since he wants me to mount a scope and sight it in for him as well..

Sad to hear about those mags...hopefully this one works..

Thanks..

I heard about those - and I have two PH's now. Never had that happen to me yet, and I have been firing some pretty stout loads. Good thing to keep an eye out for now. I did look at the tangs and noticed that one of mine seems to be "indented" a bit where it engages the release. A little screw driver fixed that in a hurry.

I watched the gun shows and stuff. I now have 3 of the little devils (magazines) in my collection for the 30-06's. They do come up once in awhile, and yes, they will cost some coin.

Thanks
