Hi guys. I'm hoping to get a little input on a rifle I very briefly ran across recently. I don't have too many details, but I'll give you what I have and maybe your experience can steer me in the right direction.

I saw a guy selling a Parker-Hale .308. He didn't know the model and I couldn't see markings in my quick examination. It had a massive heavy barrel and an equally beefy wood stock. The scope was nothing out of the ordinary except for what I can only assume was a long sun-shield out front. I don't recall seeing a front sight on it. I'm also not sure if it had a detachable mag or not (probably not). It did have a folding bipod which I now assume was also PH. It wasn't a remarkably beautiful gun. It looked like used shooter in decent shape.

The older fella who was selling it said he bought it ages ago when he thought he might get into long distance shooting but he never did. He also said he wasn't sure if he ever even fired it.

In the bit of research I've done I think the closest thing to it is possibly an M82.
Something similar to this:

He wanted $1000 for it. I've got no idea on pricing for these things. Maybe if some of you have some examples of rifles that this may be and their current market values you could post that. I've been thinking about this thing for a few days now and I will have another opportunity in a couple of weeks to pick it up.

I know it's not much to go on, but any info or incites you all may be able to share would be a big help and I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

We can't really help you unless you either know what it is or can post pics of what it is. It may be a genuine M82 or similar, or or may just be a tarted up Mauser with a Parker Hale action. Can't say unless we have some details.

Well, it was definitely a Mauser-based action. I could see that for sure.
I hate asking these types of questions where I don't have much info to give. My apologies.
Let's just say it is an M82...or a 1200...or a slapped-together clone. What are all these types of rifles going for these days? Rough estimates are welcome.
I'm interested in this unit mainly because long distance shooting with a rifle specifically designed for that purpose has always been something I had a slightly more than a passing interest in. And it would be a very nice addition to my modest collection.
Thanks again.

Slapped together clone won't be worth much at all. I sold a decent Mauser target rifle for $400 I think. An M82 or M85 (or a C3 clone) would likely be worth at least $1000 depending on factors, and mainly depending how badly you want it/how much the guy thinks he can squeeze you for. Was the action open like a regular Mauser or was it fully enclosed, like a Tikka T3?

It sounds like it is most likely a PH 1200 TX. This was the basis for the M82/C3. It could be single shot, mag fed and any number of calibers. I think .308 was the most popular.

No idea as to current value but it's a fair bit more than a plain 1200.

If it has an actual Parker Hale bipod, the bipod alone is worth $300 which makes the rifle sound like a good deal overall if it is a TX model. The bipod in the pic is a Harris. Did it look like a Versapod? They're PH clones in aluminum.
