Hello all,

I have a Parker Hale safari deluxe in .308 that I intend to mount a Khales scope (26mm tube) on with detachable rings.
The issue is that it didn't come with bases and it's hard to find corresponding 26mm rings. I found a set of Talley rings and bases (#6 M98 .500") but when I went to install them I found that the holes in the receiver are set slightly too wide for the rear base.
I emailed Talley inquiring if they were familiar with this issue and if there was a different base that works with PH receivers that have clip slots cut in them and got a short corporate response simply saying that my receiver was drilled out of spec.

Do any of you more experienced shooters know if the older PH rifles need to be paired with PH bases or if my receiver could, in fact, be drilled out of spec?

Back in the day, Parker Hale made and sold A28 base for Mauser 98 type rifles like yours - I have dozens of them here. I have swapped with and from Weaver, Warne and other "modern" bases several times - however - there was a series of rear sights (aperture sights by XS is here) that had holes .605" centre-to-centre on Mauser's - which is unusually "large" compared to most scope bases listed for Mauser 98 types. For example, Weaver #45 base typically calls for 0.504" centre-to-centre. Sometimes when a rear scope base is removed, you find three tapped holes - I had always presumed that someone had installed a "long" hole spacing base at some point - I am not aware of the factory ever doing three holes in the rear bridge.

The main issue with PH bases is that they seem to fit ONLY to Parker Hale rings - Weaver, Warne, Leupold and others will not fit. If you are mounting a 26 mm body scope, you will need PH rings that end in "point 4" - ###X.4. I had read, but never tried, that scope rings made for air rifles - Sports Match - would fit and work on "A" series PH bases. Note that PH also made narrower "B" series stuff (bases and rings).

PH bases will need PH or BSA type rings to match. Still plenty of rings available here in NZ, but 26mm is starting to become quite rare. If the bases are the same as the Husky 1600, presumably they are, I have some bases and a tidy set of 26mm rings here that I would sell if you cant get any in Canada.
Weaver have bases to fit, both steel and alloy. And Weaver use to make a 26mm ring set as well, if you can find some. You can use 1" rings for a 26mm scope but its best to get some slightly longer screws for the ring as the ones for 25mm end up just a smidgen short.
Or you can fit the Burris rings to the Weaver bases - the ones with the inserts will accomodate a 26mm scope without damaging the scope tube.

I'll keep you in mind if I'm out of options here.
