Parkerised 870 with surface rust

Here is a pic of two barrels of mine, top is a parkerized police and bottom sandblasted blue express barrel.

left side on both barrels have Balistol on them and I degreased the right side with brakeclean. Both barrels look similar when oiled but very different when degreased. The Parkerized 870p is very dull greyish color and rough like 1000grit sandpaper and the blued express barrel is smooth pebbly feel with a metalic black colour. The parkerized finish also holds the lube much better the the blued barrel which the oil wipes off very easily.

Parkerized finish is better then any blueing and is the reason why militaries and police use it on their guns. But you must oil it for it to get the max protection.

I carried an 870 express on a two hour hike in late summer. Most of the way in one hand, gripped around the receiver. I did not wipe it down that night... The very next morning I had a wonderful hand shaped area of surface rust. I think the finish on a utility shotgun should be more robust then that. It scratched way too easily too. I think I'll stick with blued guns, they look much better anyways lol

^"Utility" in price maybe, but no carbon steel gun (regardless of who makes it, the price, or the finish) will go completely unscathed if exposed to salty oil/water (=sweat) for 24+ hours. Some will do better than others mind you, but I wouldn't expect Remington's least expensive pump shotgun to stand-up to it all that well. We can blame the finish, but really...it's a minor case of neglect that caused the hand-shaped spot of corrosion. With that said, I'm actually a proponent of the 870 Express..and have had one in the family for some time. It's been hunted about 7-8 times, been out for clays over a dozen times, and still looks like the day I bought it. The gun is stored only after a wipe-down with oil (including the bore) and I throw an oily rag in a heavy ziploc bag every time I take it out. After a hunt/shoot, give it a wipe down, then run the bore mop through when I get home. If the gun gets wet, it comes apart for that wipe down at the end of the shoot...comes home with it's barrel off/action open and out of the case. Same goes for all of my guns, the 870 Express doesn't get extra TLC.

The only shotgun I've ever knowingly neglected was my Mossberg 500 Persuader I bought used. Parkerized gun, well-used when I got it, a few bumps/scratches, etc. Anyhow, took it out on my AB gopher trip and I think it got wiped-off maybe once in 9 days. Carried/used every day. The parkerizing on this gun seems to be very good, I think the gun looked BETTER at the end of the trip than the beginning..and I like it even more. lol Granted, didn't get wet even once...and while we were warm/sweaty occasions...it didn't get subjected to much of that.

It's a blued sand blasted finish which looks tacicool but in fact makes the metal more porous and prone to rust. Only police 870s have parkerized metal aside from the glossy blued models.

^this. And...I might know someone selling an 870P. :)

I have shotgun 14 inch Parkerised 870 shotgun . It was left in a gun case for a long time . There is surface rust on the whole gun now . Is there a coating I can put on the gun to rid it of the surface rust ? Any idea at the cost to re coat a Parkerised gun with surface rust ?

Didn't really think of it last time, but try some EEZOX? just rub the barrel down and let it soak, good luck :)
