Hey gents .. have a nice little Winchester 1906 I just picked up. About 5 centimeters from the muzzle, there is a small ring of metal in the barrel. I can get a jag and patch past it, but not a brush. I did all the research on what to use (if lead). I tried solvent, tried peroxide and vinegar. The stuff came out clear! The bore looks not too bad if I can just get this ring or partial ring out of the barrel! Any ideas? If it isn't lead .. what the hell is it?

It's quite likely to be part of a cleaning brush that was too big for the bore. It got stuck and broke off in the bore when an attempt was made to get it out.

I once cleaned a blocked chimney for a neighbour, it was blocked with a brand new brush. He swore it was nothing to do with him, but I know nobody else had cleaned his chimney.

Have you tried shooting it out ? :D
 
Wow. Can't believe no one has any advice. If no ideas as to what it is, how about some on how to get it out?

I guess it could be part of a brass brush stuck in there. Certainly have no intention of shooting it out!

i worked on the bore for 3 hours last night using shooter's choice solvent. I managed to get the brush in and all the way back out. I continued to work it, but there is still a small lip of metal ( i am starting to think that it is lead), but i was hoping that it might come out if I shoot a few rounds through it. I am a little worried that the lip in there can still cause issues if fired.

I can't tell if that's sarcasm, so I'll say it: The "issues" would be severe upon shooting through an obstructed barrel. You can say goodbye to your gun, and possibly your hands, eyes, face, life, etc.
 
I guess I needed to define what I meant. The "lip" that is left is VERY small now, but still noticeable when I push the brush or patch through. I am convinced it is lead. I knew enough not to try to fire it when I couldn't get anything past it, but after that, I thought that it would be possible. Am I wrong?? I spent another half hour at lunch with some solvent and a brush wrapped with 0000 steel wool.
Didn't really do much .. the rifling is stronger than I thought now that it is clean!

I've got the same thing in an old 10/22 barrel. I think it was a lead ring that got stuck. I've tried everything but no luck so far.
 
If it is lead, find some metallic mercury and put it in the barrel (you wil have to plug one end first), then allow it to roll back and forth past the lead "ring". It will dissolve the lead completely, and you can just dump it out of the barrel into a glass container to keep for a future lead removal. One caution: Do not let metallic mercury touch any gold jewellry. It will dissolve gold as well. Regards, Eagleye.
 
I am on the hunt for mercury right this moment .. might have to grab a couple old thermometers or something! So no one has tried to shoot it out? I believe now that it was a squib round that someone shot through that left the ring. There is no bulging at all.

IIRC, I turned down a brass plug to the bore size, and tapped it through, shearing off the lead.

After that it was steel wool onna stick, and lots of elbow work, then more.

It shot much better after that!

Gonna have the machine shop make something up for me today!
