Hello All

I am new to both this forum and hunting. Have just bought a nice, gently preowned Marlin 336 (Circa 1971) and want to add a sling to it. The guys at Bass Pro have sold me a great sling but the fittings that come with it aren't to my liking. I am hesitant to add the attachment ring to my magazine for fear of bending or warping it. Instead I would like to buy the proper rear band with sling attachment point for the weapon.

So here's the question. Does anyone know where I can buy original Marlin or aftermarket parts for this rifle? I've found a "ga-zillion" websites but the US ones don't want to ship stuff to Canada for fear we'll use it against them! ;)

Any help here would be greatly apprecated.

BTW, great forums. Nice to see a subject like firearms ownership spoken to from a truely Canadian perspective. Well done.

Try Brownell's. They have 99% of the parts for my 1894. Don't see why they wouldn't have your part. My last order took 2 weeks to arrive. I've been considering replacing my magazine tube sling swivel, like the one you have, with a forend tip integrated part, like you want to get. I'm having a hard time justifying spending the $20USD though.
BTW, It'll cost you $15 for shipping whether you buy $5 worth of stuff or $99.
If you're going to shoot the Marlin regularl you may want to buy some spare parts (ejector, extractor/spring,firing pin/spring,etc.) and a new magazine spring while you're at it.

regards, Steve

Welcome to the site csmith99, and you've got a nice rifle there :)

Uncle Mike's is your friend. There's a few options - you can simpley get a machine screw set up to be used in the existing barrel band. You need to drill and tap for this of course. There's also two types with a 1" ring designed to fit over your tube magazine. Looking at the Wholesale sports catalogue, they're Uncle Mike's items QD 115 CF and MP 130 CF with the ring design. I think SIR and Russels carry these too.

Well, seeing as I'll be using this as a deer gun in the field, I guess I'd better stock up on parts that will be wearing out in the next season or two.

I don't mind spending the $$ if it means fewer problems with the gun. I'm a firm believer in doing things right the first time. I'd prefer the gun not jam in the bush during that one week a year I get to let deer avoid me.:D

Thanks for the advice. I'll take a gander at that site.

Thanks for the sentiment. I've been snooping around for a month or so, and this is the first chance I've had to participate.

I'll keep a look out for Uncle Mikes. I like to use original parts, but if they are't available, I'll check them out.

Thanks again

Re: Spare parts:

If your gun functions properly as is, I would recommend changing only the magazine spring right away, as well as replacing the forend tip for a sling swivel for field use.
All the other parts I listed are things that you may/may not need to replace after many, many, many rounds of fire. You could buy all these parts for under $40, and if you intend to keep the gun for the long haul, it's nice to have them on hand.

It actually functions quite well. I had it out for the first time last weekend. Pumped 60 rounds through it to get a feel as to sight a scope I bought at Bass Pro (worst thing they did was put that 10 minutes away from me).

Once I got a few rounds out (and let my friend get a few downrange) I spent the time getting the scope sighted in. Then we killed off the last few trying to put one round in the same hole as the last.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the Marlin. I had always seen them in the old cowboy flicks, but this was my first experience. Makes me wish I'd started this hobby years ago. I could have spent all that $$ on guns instead of fishing rods!

I've looked at Brownells site, and tallied up all the suggested parts. It's less than $100 USD. Not a bad deal to bring a 35 year old weapon to "like new" status.

Thanks again for all your help guys (or gals as it may be). I appreciate it.

I've got about 6 Marlins and a couple right around the vintage of yours. Marlin didn't install studs or swivels back then. Yours should have the 'bullseye' on the bottom of the rear stock which was where Marlin suggested you install a stud for a sling. (After buying a couple that were mounted just forward leaving the bullseye alone this is my preference).

In my experience you will not devalue your rifle by altering it for studs/swivels. And quality 'jobber' parts for the purpose likewise. Enjoy :D
