"Parts Guns"...Caveat Emptor?

For a first rifle, and looking for a decent price in a midlength 16" than I'd go with a new Armalite from Wolverine. You get a lifetime warranty from a quality manufacturer at a decent price.

Like has been said, once you get into the black rifles a little more you'll have better knowledge to wade into the used parts gun arena. The fact is, it is impossible to tell who the manufacturer is on most aftermarket parts since they aren't marked.

The problem with parts guns is generally speaking the individual assembling the gun tends to use the cheapest gun show parts possible and being totally cheap the same person likely does not have the proper tools. All my Colts and Bushmasters have been parts guns for the most part, however all of them were assembled using every tool available down to the barrel nut alignment gauge and proper torque specs applied, all ran perfectly. Use good parts, torque the barrel properly, stake the gas key and stock lock ring and swap a few extractor bits and 99% of us are good to go.:50cal: Now the parts guns from back in the 80s and early 90s...those were a whole other story....:jerkit:

ive built at least 75 ar15s from just parts guns, its all about what parts you use.
So what i,m saying is that if you were to buy a cheap no name factory ar15 ie norinco, Model 1 sales ect you get a #### gun weather it comes "factory complet" or in parts.
Some of the guns i have built you could not get that good even if you were to buy it "factory"
last build i did from parts was.
colt/ diemaco 1/7 556 chambered 20" barrle
kac flashider
colt M4 fead ramp upper
les baur chrome M16 bolt carrier
armalite lower with colt m16 lower parts kit, dpms low power spring
C7 mag button
KAC buis, Troy front
KAC RAS
Eotec on a Larue mount
magpull M93 but stock
Mag pull 30/5rd mags
magpull mad p grip and trigger guard
DD single point sling mount
BFG sling
you only get that by building it your self

Simon, there is one downside to making parts guns the way we do. I just tallied up the totals on my SP2 lightweight Carbine and I am a few hundred shy of a 6920...there is a definite penalty for using high end parts and it comes in the form of a final price.

Most of my guns are "frankenguns" -- but but lovingly together with the best of parts.

Both Pat Rogers and Larry Vickers will say dont run a parts gun - but both with amend that to allow for high end parts guns.

The issue is "gun show special" parts, stuff from DPMS (Didn't Pass Military Spec - quote koldt) Oly, Hesse etc...
