Patterned my Baikal single shot .410

Been shooting FC .410's for 50+ years and 30 yards is max with a Baikal or Savage 24 the only two over choked guns that I have seen do it.Early in the year when foliage is still present 20 yards is max or lost and crippled birds happen. You may find as I did the smaller shot and 2 1/2" shells kill and pattern better.I bought a flat of Win AA 2 1/2" #9 for the hulls but out to 20 yards as is they swat grouse with my Savage 24.Range estimation varies user to user.Yards and feet get lost in the story.Mostly I use my 28ga and I'm good to 40 yards.

Yaa there's some guys that never owned a rangefinder in here. 30 max but I find they die easier on the wing at long range, like ducks. You can kill em at 40 but it's mostly luck to even get a shot that far away

I use my wingmaster 410 in covey season and a cz ringneck sxs 28ga in october. That thing has the tightest chokes ive ever seen on any gun and ive dusted a few past 40 with it now. it's been a good year, killed 26 birds in september. You want long range you gotta bore up

I read Bob Brister's book "Shotgunning: The Art and Science" some time ago, but if I recall, he wrote that a full choked 410 can throw a larger pattern than a comparably choked 12 ga. Something to do with shot deformation. Beyond 30 yards, the 410 was of little use.
